828 mk3 FW - Audio issue

Post by Cacus »

Hi all, and thanks for taking the time to read this.

I have a MOTU 828 mk3 Firewire only unit. Recently I upgraded from a 2010 Mac Pro to a 2013 Trash Can.

Now obviously to connect the 828 to the Mac I'm using the TB2 to FW adaptor. But its the only thing on that specific thunderbolt bus.

Initially I did a clean install of Catalina (10.5) and got the MOTU 828 running. However even though it works after initial boot of system you could for example be play something in iTunes and then all of a sudden no audio out. The time till the audio stops is random, sometimes you'll get 5mins others 30mins. The only way to resolve is reboot the system, and wait for it to do it again!

While its in this state if you select the 'Sound' control panel in system preferences the Mac just freezes. But the menu bar sound icon still shows the 828 and the system profile still shows the TB2FW adaptor and FW devices connected.

Any way I understand that as a legacy product it's only supposed to be supported up to Mojave (10.4) so another clean install this time of Mojave, and by clean I mean completely erase the drive. I reinstalled the MOTU drivers etc and low and behold I get the same issue.

Has anyone else experienced this or subsequently solved it? Or is anyone using a 828 m3 FW on a 2013 MP without issue?

Any assistance would be really appreciated.

Cheers
Steve
