Using a MOTU 828es alongside MOTU Ultralite mk4

Post by hdn »

I'm currently waiting on my warranty replacement 828es from MOTU (does anyone have any idea how long this takes usually by the way??), and in the meantime I've realized I can't really be without an audio interface for any longer. I'm thinking of buying a MOTU Ultralite MK4 to use on projects until MOTU ships my 828es back.

Before I grab an Ultralite MK4 though, will I be able to use both the MOTU 828es + Ultralite MK4 simultaneously in this way:

- 828es as primary usb audio interface
- ultralite mk4 provides additional analog line inputs
- utlralite mk4 channels forwarded to adat out
- 828es receives additional channels via one of the two adat ins

I need more analog inputs than the 828es provides alone anyway, so ideally this is how I imagine the setup working. Does anyone else have experience running a similar setup? Will this work?

I'd spend the extra $50 and get the Ultralite AVB, with which you are guaranteed great compatibility via the AVB Network.. no hub required if only two devices on the network.

When I had an issue with my 828ES (it was functioning enough to allow continuing work in studio, but issues existed), MOTU, at my request, shipped me a replacement (for which I was charged) then refunded the charge when they received my old 828ES which I shipped to them upon receipt of the new one.

Ah that's cool, thanks for the suggestion. Those hi-z guitar inputs are gonna go to waste though, everything I'm connecting is going to be line level. Those mic inputs don't seem to double as line inputs like the ones on the MK4 as well...

Anyway, glad to hear it all worked out on your end, kind of wish they gave me the option they gave you. They just had me register my 828es and told me to ship it to them, and that they'd send me a refurbished unit upon receiving it. Anyway, I shipped it around Dec 14th, and they confirmed that they received it but it's been radio silence ever since...
