constant crashing
Hello, I need help from you Mac experts. I have a 2009 12 core Mac Pro that I'm trying to revive.
It has 40 gigs of Ram, running the latest version of High Sierra. It crashes every few minutes with out fail.
I don't fully understand this crash report; I'm not sure if its a processor issue, or a corrupted file.
Can you guys help me decipher this report?
Thank you in advance!

Re: constant crashing
Hey Kwiz... although I am no expert when it comes to reading crash reports, the section that begins:
Have you tried a clean install of the OS and removal of all peripherals? NVRAM reset? Removal of RAM?
Here's what Apple recommends: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT200553
If no luck, I'd suggest you log in over at MacRumors.com and post in the Mac Pro Forum there. I hope you can get it sorted.

Re: constant crashing
Remove this.
com.paceap.kext.pacesupport.snowleopard 5.9.1
You may need to disable SIP to do so. It will not affect any version of iLok that works over High Sierra. This was required only through Lion is a well known crash inducer in later OS.
I have no idea if that's the only troublemaker but it's one I know.

Re: constant crashing
HCMarkus and mikehalloran, thank you so much for the help!
BTW HC, I did do a fresh install about a month ago and today I was tempted to wipe the entire drive and start over.
Thought about what that would entail and decided not to go that route.
I'll try all suggestions and report back.

Re: constant crashing
First, boot into the Repair Partition (boot holding the ⌘ r keys). Reinstall the MacOS via Internet Recovery. This will install a fresh copy of OS 10.13.6 leaving your data untouched.
Second, do a Safe Boot holding the Shift key. Log in when prompted. After the desktop finishes rebuilding, reboot again.
If you can't do either of these, post back.
If the problem remains, give Apple support a try. If you can get someone to call you back, they'll install a crash tracer that will list anything causing a problem.
If Mojave or later over a supported Mac, they will call you back after initiating the request at the support site. Support for High Sierra ended two months ago so you might be told that this is ineligible for the call. It doesn't hurt to try, however, and the techs don't care once they are on the phone with you. They will tell you to do the first two steps, howeve, so doing them beforehand saves a lot of time.
Whatever they tell you to remove, do so. I put such things in a desktop folder in case it causes something to mess up. I've never had to put things back, though. A similar call after last March Security Update was how I found out about that old iLok .kext so make it gone.
Thanks Mike, I’ll give this a try later on today. I tried what you previously suggested and couldn’t locate the com.paceap.kext.pacesupport.snowleopard 5.9.1 file. I disabled the SIP as well. Spotlight nor Easy Find could locate the file even though another crash report showed it being there. Not sure if this file is invisible but right now I can’t locate it.
HCmarkus recommended a Re-install as well so hopefully what you both suggested will work. Fingers crossed.
Thanks again for the help, I’ll report back.

Re: constant crashing
Finder's search won't show you hidden files or other non-hidden system files.
My method is to use a lovely utility called Find Any File. It faithfully shows you all files that meet your search criteria and lets you see them and delete them as you see fit.

Yes it will but you have to enable System and Hidden files are included in the dropdown menus for Find.stubbsonic wrote: ↑Wed Jan 27, 2021 9:37 am Finder's search won't show you hidden files or other non-hidden system files.
+1 on Find Any File. Great utility. It's how Find should work but doesn't.My method is to use a lovely utility called Find Any File. It faithfully shows you all files that meet your search criteria and lets you see them and delete them as you see fit.

I'm looking for that, but I'm not seeing it. Also, a fun tip, for those who don't know. You can toggle the view of hidden files on/off in any Finder windows by typing COMMAND-SHIFT-PERIOD (I just recently learned that one).

There's a + sign in the search screen that appears when you enter something, at the top. At the extreme right click this plus sign, and another line of options appears to add other search criteria. Click where it says name, and go to other. That opens up a very long list of file characteristics including system and hidden. That list contains a box you can check to make criteria a regular part of your searches.

Sometimes, File Visibility should be changed to Invisible instead. Visible or Invisible normally works fine

Ah right. I was looking for "dropdowns" in the wrong place. Now I know what you mean.

Unfortunately, after trying all the was suggested, the computer still crashes every few minutes.
Even after installing "Find Any File", I still can't locate the "com.paceap.kext.pacesupport.snowleopard 5.9.1" file.
The latest crash reports it as being there...
Mikehalloran, the only thing I haven't done is call Apple as you suggested.
My question to you is, do you think wiping the SSD and starting from scratch will fix it?
I wouldn't need to load everything I normally use on this machine. Just a few 3rd part plugins with DP, Protools, and Logic Pro.
Thanks again for your help guys!

Re: constant crashing
It's possible you're typing too much and getting a character wrong.
Try typing just part of that file name. Find any file will give you all the results matching your string, even if incomplete.
