Is clicking at 128 sample size normal 828es

Post by corenfro »

I'm considering returning the 828es. Despite it sounding absolutely fantastic & having an amazing EQ, the latency performance sucks even compared to my 1st gen focusrite 2i4....

After about 5 minutes it starts clicking and stuttering until I change buffer size. It doesn't seem to matter which buffer size I change to but (could be 32 could be 512) but it resolves the issue..... for 5-10 minutes until it starts clicking again.

In general the larger sample sizes are stable for longer (as one would expect), but even 128 sample size at 48khz or 192khz is not stable after some time. Literally had the same issue w/ my focusrite at lower sample sizes but even through a USB hub it was more stable than the 828es at 128 sample size.

Is this normal? I will try a thunderbolt and see if it is any more stable, but ultimately I am wondering if I simply have a lemon? I'd rather get a replacement now before my return period to sweetwater runs out.

Again: I absolutely love the device for everything but this. The sound quality is night and day better than the focusrite 2i4 w/ my AKG K702 and Ultrason pro 750s (& JBL nearfields) but if I have a lemon I would like to take care of it.

How many tracks? This makes a big difference.

I normally run a 32 buffer when tracking but I won’t have all tracks playing back in DP while doing so if over 8 or 9. When mixing, I can get away without changing my buffer size but only up to about 10 tracks. Since my choirs will have 20–30 audio, 128 is fine but 256 eliminates any possibility of of buffer overrun. I had to increase it to 512 on a recent remix with 100+ audio tracks going on.

Honestly there is more issues when I use it w/ my surface laptop streaming youtube than when I use it w/ my personal PC. I think Microsoft Teams - which is notoriously bad for interacting w/ sound card drivers, is possibly to blame.

I haven't actually had any issues with my other laptop w/ the more powerful CPU and running the actual DAW. No DSP effects although I do have 4 analog inputs & 1 XLR input set to permanently monitor.

This now happens regardless of sample size. 256 is not stable. Still after 5-10 minutes any sound from any application clicks. It doesn't matter what I change the sample size from/to but merely changing it in general makes the clicking go away. And it's more of a fuzz than clicking. It sounds like an old FM radio slightly out of tune.
