Unexplainable blue screens. Need a new motherboard/cpu?

Post by ronausti »

Can anyone recommend a comparably versatile replacement for the following system?

ASUS TUF SABERTOOTH 990FX R2.0 AM3+ ATX AMD Motherboard
AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 965 Processor, 3400 MHz, 4 Core(s), 4 Logical Processor(s)
16 Gig Memory
MOTU UltraLITE AVB

Reason for upgrade:
(More detail at viewtopic.php?f=14&t=65037)

The issue, which has persisted for the past year, and which MOTU and I have exhaustively tested, is as follows (a detailed chronology of tests can be provided):

Until recently my main computer had an ASUS M4A89GTD PRO/USB3 mobo. It worked great with my MOTU UltraLITE AVB audio interface for 3 years, using Windows 7 Ultimate (authorized, non-OEM). Then on June 25, 2018, it stopped "hearing" my computer and gave me the Blue Screen of death anytime I made it default player and tried to play audio (even the MS test bells). Same problem when I temporarily tried it with the similar ASUS Sabertooth mobo (my backup computer, also using a separately purchased, authorized Windows 7 Ultimate), which has the same type of AMD processor. I spent months working with MOTU trying to sort out the cause, with no success. This included sending their product to them for testing (it tested okay). I tried different USB ports and cards, shorter and replacement cables, various Windows permissions settings, etc. -- every conceivable mix and match option, no solution. I finally took the UltraLITE out of service and went back to my trusty E-Mu 1616m MicroDock.

Last month I began using the Sabertooth 990FX R.20 (mentioned above) as my main system, no improvement. I then upgraded to Windows 10, and the BSOD is even more frequent, always citing the MOTU driver. The BSOD occurs even when just accessing a folder or on other events, unrelated to audio.

Last week MOTU sent me a new unit to try with my system. It, too, produces BSOD.

Stop Code: KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED
What failed: MOTUProAudio.sys

I'm taking the system to a Microsoft store tomorrow, my last remaining hope.

What I need...

In any case, it's time to get an entirely new MOBO/CPU, since the M4A89GTD is not Win 10 compatible. But there are hundreds of mobo/cpu combinations to choose from these days, and I'm overwhelmed.

Shortlist of known-compatible components, anyone?

My main needs are:
* Compatibility, expandability, versatility and affordability.
* I'm not a gamer, not a video producer (although I do sometimes use a video editing lite program).
* I do need professional audio (ie., support for USB audio interfaces such as the MOTU, Pro Tools and other DAW software, etc), word processing, Photoshop, lots of browser tabs (memory), etc.
* To save a slot and probably affordability, the graphics can be on the mobo. My dual monitors are currently connected via VGA and DVI, but each will accept HDMI (I hope with the following resolutions): My main monitor (Dell U2713H) is currently on DVI (2560x1440), but also takes DisplayPort, MiniDP, or HDMI. My secondary monitor (Samsung U28D590D) is currently connected via VGA (1600 x 1200) but also takes HDMI x 2.
* At least a couple of USB 2.x ports for compatibility's sake, a generous assortment of USB 2 and 3.x,
* At least 6 SATA drive connectors (it's in a 10-bay tower) ,
* Comparable range of PCIe slots (including, although unlikely, a PCI slot? ... you never know).
* IMPORTANT: MOTU says to AVOID ASMedia and Renesas USB chipsets, although if necessary an add-in USB card would get around this (they say).

At this point, I'd also be open to other MOBO and processor brands, but ASUS and AMD are all I've ever used. Except for this sudden incompatibility issue, which appears to be specific to something about my system, I've been satisfied with both vendors and their support for decades.

Budget is a factor. In 2015, this board cost me $175, bare. This time, though, I'll need a current CPU and memory (16G, expandable to 32 someday?), so will look for a bundle price.

I am having the same issues with a MOTU 8A. I have tried 2 usb3 cards and neither on works. The last card caused blue screen crashes everytime i tried to play audio through the avb.
