Is it possible to change tempo without MIDI moving?

Post by outofhand »

I've recorded MIDI into DP from an external sequencer application.

However when doing so, the BPM setting in DP didn't quite match the BPM that was set in the external sequencer.

Therefore my recorded MIDI isn't quite lining up with the grid in DP - it drifts more and more out of sync with DP's grid as more time elapses.

Is it possible for me to change the tempo in DP without having the MIDI play faster or slower?

ie. I want the MIDI notes to stay exactly where they are in time, despite changing the tempo in DP to "stretch" the grid.

Yes. You can Lock MIDI events in time by selecting 'Lock' in the mini-menu on the SE or in the Track Overview (the little lock icon). However, be WARNED that there is a major bug introduced in DP10 that makes working with MIDI on Locked tracks virtually impossible. You can adjust tempo, as you describe, to align the events to the grid, but many other operations will make MIDI notes disappear permanently. It can't be undone except by reverting to the last Saved version of the Project. Neither Undo or the Undo History can fix it.

If you do Lock the track just don't forget to Unlock it after you've aligned the MIDI.

Thanks. I'm so staying in 9.52. Frankly, it's hard to believe that hasn't been updated/corrected yet by MOTU after all this time...

Yes, it's crazy they haven't fixed it. It's easy enough to work around, but you do have to remember to Unlock tracks or you can seriously mess things up. It's the really undoable-ness of the issue that raises it to the level of major-bug. ....it only applies to MDI btw. Locked audio tracks are fine.

Further advice would be make sure you unlock all the MIDI tracks when you open projects that were started pre-DP10.

Thank you, locking worked as you describe. I'm on DP 7.24 so no bugs with it.

Now I can see that the problem is micro differences between what DP thinks is 136.37 BPM and what the external sequencer thinks is 136.37 BPM..... must be implementation differences in timing between apps.

After 2 minutes of playback the MIDI events have accumulated 5 ticks of difference from DP, ie. they are 5 ticks behind the grid. After 10 minutes they are about 20+ ticks off.

I suggest a different strategy. Let the Wookiee win. Lol

I’d import the MIDI and use the REGION > Scale Time on the MIDI track.
