Os Upgrade

Post by Oddur G »

Hi
I have a mac mini 2012 i7 Os X 10.10.5 running DP 9.52. This combination has been relatively stable with no issues. Recently I was tempted to puchase United Audio Lexicon 480L reverb plugin. After the fact I realized that I needed to update the UAD software version 9.7 which needs Os X 10.12 Sierra to run. I find myself in a bit of a dilemma since I don´t want to invest in DP 10.

I´ve serarched on the internet for downloads of 10.12, 10.13 & 10.14 from Apple without success. The sites that offer downloads seem a little dodgy. Can anyone here tell me if:

1) there is an Apple link to download any of the above Os X
2) it´s safe to use any of the sites that offer downloads
Thanks in advance
Oddur

Re: Os Upgrade found a link on apple support

Post by Oddur G »

Of course,
here´s the link I found - https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT208202 - in step four it says:
If you still need macOS Sierra, use this link: Download macOS Sierra. A file named InstallOS.dmg will download to your Mac.

I downloaded the file which is 5.01 GB, but I have yet to upgrade, which I will do today or tomorrow after backing up the HD of course.

I will let you guys know how it goes :) .

Re: Os Upgrade successfully installed

Hi all

I ran the Os X 10.12 install, all went well. Time will tell whether 10.12 will be stable or not :)

Cheers

Will be? Sierra was released in 2016. Per MOTU, DP 9.5 is optimized for High Sierra and later.

If you have not replaced the hard drive in that 2012 Mini with an SSD yet, you have not unleashed the performance potential of that Mac.

Thanks Mike Halloran for your input and encouragement.

That´s settled then, I will be upgrading to High Sierra tomorrow
and no I haven´t replaced the hard drive yet. I have an 1TB ssd and a mod kit from OWC ready but the courage to open up the mini has been lacking :) .

Replace the drive first. The mod kit is to add a 2nd drive. Replacing the original is a straight swap.

The chances that an original HDD from 2012 is still good is well… I haven't seen one yet. When I replaced the HDD in my dad's 2012 MacBook Pro last year, I figured I'd finally found one (he hardly used it). Nope, it too was failing.

Thanks Mike. Just finished the SSD install and 10.13 update. It was a bit complicated. I found a link at Apple Support - https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT208969- In step 4 Download Mac Os High Sierra it says: If you still need High Sierra use this App Store link. .... When the link opens it says Get ... when the button is pushed you get a message to the affect that the file is corrupt. After some head scratching and googling I found a paculiar workaround on Apple Support. With no other alternatives I tried, it entailed disconnecting the computer from the internet, setting back the clock/calander to 2014, then connecting back. After doing that I pushed the button above which now said download, which I pushed and was able to download the file. After that all went well.

Interesting that you had to do that in order to DL the file, 'cause typically I've only needed to use that trick before running the installer itself (various Mac OS flavours over the years).

The fact that the installer performs some sort of security-related (that'd be Apple's justification for it, I've no doubt) date check is old news to me, but dayum, having to jump through this hoop just to be able to DL the file? Wassup wit' dat?

Pretend I've placed your favourite quote here

I´m by no means an expert in this field as you´ve probably already gathered. I found it a bit far fetched and was surprised that it actually worked.

I expect you’d also have to change preference for time so that the computer clock is not automatically set when you turn the internet connection back on.

But it sure is annoying. I wish there was a setting in OS X to tell it to just do what you tell it instead of blocking things and constantly asking if you’re sure.

I've not had to do any of that but I always make a USB Installer and boot from that.

Pretty certain that, because the installer has no OS of its own and is incapable of connecting to the internet, the date cannot be an issue.
