Hi,
I laid down a MIDI piano track without click so I could vary tempo.
Now I'm trying to create a tempo map to follow my live playing so I can add instruments and quantize if needed.
I've watched MOTU's instructional youtube video and am doing exactly what he says. However, even though I'm "conducting" what I want, the track is nowhere near what I'm doing.
It'll speed up and slow down when I do, but the downbeats are out to lunch.
None are even close.
Am I doing something wrong?
Thanks.
Tap Tempo problem.

Re: Tap Tempo problem.
It works, but it takes lots of getting used to for you to conduct DP successfully, 'cause it's a bit like a diva. You have to think a little "ahead of time" but tap in time.
WHAT REALLY HELPS is tapping smaller note values, i.e., eight notes instead of quarter notes. This makes DP respond better and it gives your tempo map much better resolution. You can then easily change the recorded notes/tempo back to quarter notes with a couple of clicks.
EVEN BETTER and easier, use the Record Beats command instead!
You basically tap (normally) along your performance, and DP changes the tempo as necessary to align your music to your taps.
Afterwards, if you didn't get a tapped part perfectly, or you want to tweak the resulting tempo map further, you can do it with its command brother, the Adjust Beats command, by graphically moving barlines to snap to your MIDI notes or audio waveforms. Very easy and intuitive.
It's also a piece of cake to use Record Beats in smaller sections, so you don't have to tap perfectly through the whole piece in one take.
This command was born to do exactly this.

Thanks guys.
I'll give it a try.

Re: Tap Tempo problem.
If your performance has the timing you want, you want to use Adjust Beats to get the tempo map to conform to it. Recording Tap Tempo is for imparting/changing variability to a sequence without it, so not the right tool here, and certainly not useful until you have an aligned grid.NealF wrote:Hi,

Re: Tap Tempo problem.
Well. It kinda worked.
Used the Record beats to get in the ballpark. Then adjusted the beats to make it more accurate.
Did this on the audio file. Worked great.
Then I went back to the MIDI file, which I would assume would have been also playing to the click. It was doing okay, although I had to bring the whole track forward 20 clicks to be right on.
However, about 2/3 through the song the MIDI track stopped following the map and just played at whatever was the last tempo it saw.
Weird.
