motu 828mk2 standalone mode, factory reset.

Post by benc77 »

Hi gang

I recently bought an 828mk2 off ebay to use standalone.
I own an 828x thunderbolt, 2408mk2 and a 2408mk3 and all work the same in standalone mode, perfectly.

My first attempt to do a factory reset went nowhere and then I tried to communicate with the unit over firewire with osx, high sierra, win7 32/win10 32 and 64 using compatibility mode.

I can imagine the drivers are tedious but the unit reacts differently every time its power cycled while disconnected to firewire.

I took a few photos and these were actually the least strange, I sometimes had 3 different clocking meters and lights all over the place.

The seller is fine to refund it but I'm just posting here to make sure I'm 100% right about this being faulty. It seems it doesn't load it's OS or something. He did say one of the mic pres had blown and i'm starting to think this may have caused some damage elsewhere like capacitors or something, not an expert in this area. Any opinions welcome.

Good inexpensive used units are pretty inexpensive these days. I recommend taking the refund and not wasting time.

Do not buy one with firmware older than 1.0.1. I bought one of the very last units made in early 2007. It’s still working great.

Hey thanx Mike, he's a really nice guy. He clearly didn't mean to sell anything faulty. An engineer friend of mine told me to carefully open the unit and check the board and I found this https://imgur.com/fzuIUZf which would acutely explain the intermittent things I see and perhaps only occurred after he tested the unit a few weeks ago. Appreciate your input.
