But more importantly, if you disable all the plugs and it doesn't crash, you now know it's one of the "100s" of plugs, and I'd START by suspecting Waves.

so far the new user solution seems to be working, at least with one project that was crashing. time will tell, but so far so good.
thx

Re: crashes in 10.11
well, fired up the same project today as the new user and it crashed.
so now i'll move the project to the boot drive--if that doesn't help i'll start the plugin elimination process you've described.
thx.

Re: crashes in 10.11
You know, trying to disable plugs takes all of 2 minutes and will eliminate or implicate the plugs. Moving to a new drive, boot or otherwise, is basically a waste of time, IMO.cvtonyd wrote:well, fired up the same project today as the new user and it crashed.

Save your current set of plugs. You may want to reference that later.

Re: crashes in 10.11
just so i'm understanding. . . .
is it best to disable plugins by opening a test file (i currently cannot open the crashed file)and just disabling in preferences, or is it better to temporarily move the components and VSTs from the library folder?
i've already made a copy of the current project folder for the test, as i'm concerned about losing all the plug settings in the project, and there are quite a few.
thx.

Re: crashes in 10.11
You can do a few ways. I'd use the ability to save plugin sets in the preferences. Create on with half the plugins disabled, and see how that works. From there you can decide whether to disable half of those, or create another set with half of those previously disabled, and so on.
I haven't tried moving the and out of the plugins folders, but I don't see why that wouldn't work.
I'd expect you'd want to use a project you know invokes the problem.

Re: crashes in 10.11
i just read that having duplicate AU and VST plugins is a problem for DP, never knew that. so i'll clean that up first.

Re: crashes in 10.11
I assume you've deleted your plist file for DP? Can't read the thread right now...
Start up DP holding the option key. Start with the "safe" setting and run your project. It'll report the missing plugs. Dismiss the dialogue box but don't delete the plugs in the project. They'll be greyed out in the mixer.
If the project crashes in the first instance (safe) then select NO PLUGS. If it doesn't crash, it could be a DP plug, but that's highly unlikely.
Then again, if the project crashes with NO PLUGS active, then you have a different problem. Maybe a bad header on a soundbite? Maybe a corrupted project file (it happens).
If the project doesn't crash, quit. DO NOT save the project at quitting.
Restart DP with the option key on. Add about a dozen or more plugs. Repeat the last procedure, again, ignoring any missing plugs. If it crashes, then one of the plugs activated is too blame. If so, repeat, eliminating some of the dozen plugs until you find the one that is the problem. No problems?
Go to the next dozen plugs, restarting DP with the option key to select the next plugs.
Repeat until it crashes. REMEMBER WHICH PLUGS YOU JUST ADDED!!! If/when the project crashes you'll know what plugs are to blame.
AU and VST plugs are fine. I mix them in DP without issues. What was the source of that info?

Re: crashes in 10.11
feeling pretty stupid. . .looks like DP does that cleanup automagically, all non-MAS/AU plugins are automatically disabled as non-primary.
so on to the process of elimination.

the info about mixing plugins came from SoS, here: https://www.soundonsound.com/techniques ... -performer
and thanks for the detailed process, as i was concerned about losing plugs in the file.

That article also says that v.2 of MacFive was recently announced — at the 2005 NAMM show. It's over 15 years old.cvtonyd wrote:the info about mixing plugins came from SoS, here: https://www.soundonsound.com/techniques ... -performer

Re: crashes in 10.11
You select which your preferred plug format is, but you can use any available plug. Occasionally, one plug will become a problem. PSP Xenon VST would crash DP on BTD, but the AU version was fine. It was eventually updated, which also brings up this: if you have hundreds of plugs, are they all up today? talk about a PITA, but some may be incompatible but no update is available.
And as always, I would NEVER put a single Waves plug on my system. It's always been the cause of my crashing headaches since day one. Butt eye digress...
