Disk Utility Internal Error?!!??!?!?!

Post by gearboy »

I spent about three hours this evening backing up and removing some programs and sample libraries from my G5. I freed up about 20 gigs on the internal drive (80gig). I knew what I was doing and I only removed Sampletank and Sonic Synth and their libraries, as I never use them. I also tossed a few programs that I never use (iRooster anyone?).

I didn't delete any files that should not have been deleted, I guess that's what I am getting at. I used Disk Warrior on all three of my drives after clearing space. I rebooted and ran Disk Utility to repair permissions.

I do not claim to be a computer genius, but I simply wanted to get my Dual G5 1.8 back in shape. I've used Disk Warrior about 6 times in the past year, the last time in October. I frequently use Disk Utility to repair permissions.

Disk Utility now locks up in the middle of "Verify Disk Permissions" and "Repair Disc Permissions". The Disk Utility Internal Error message says:

"Disk Utility has lost its connection with the Disk Management Tool and cannot continue. Please quit and relaunch Disk Utility."

What the heck??? Has anyone run into this?!!??! Should I be concerned? Is my drive going to fail? I tried using the program about 5 times before sending this post.

I know that I didn't delete anything by accident, as I simply removed audio programs and a few others that were taking up space and not being used. All things that I installed myself.

Boot from your install CD for the Mac OS and repair the disc (and then the permissions) from there. You might get more suggestions if you post the OS you are using and the version (IE- 10.4.4; 10.3.9, etc.)

It sounds like you may have deleted something you shouldn't have, or that the system may be trying to find something you set to run automatically. (Is iRooster set to crow at dawn?)

If you cannot run Repair Permissions without an error, then you will probably be headed for a crash. You might also reinstall the OS OVER the current OS (not a clean install). But again, a lot has to do with which OS and version as well as how recently it was installed.

Thanks for your response. 10.3.9 is no longer on that drive.

I spent the next five hours after that post installing Tiger 10.4.4. I've had the disks since October and have been waiting to do so. I backed up all applications etc and wiped the drive clean with a total Tiger upgrade. I'll be spending my time this week installing all of my stuff again. Good timing, too, as I am patiently waiting for Komplete 3 to arrive.

Let me ask another question:

If I pick up a 250 gig HD this week to replace the 80 gig that currently holds my boot drive/applications/etc, can I simply create two 120 gig partitions on that new drive and copy the entire boot drive over to one of them? All I have to do at that point is select that drive/partition as my new boot drive, correct?

This will give me that space that I need for the Komplete 3 Library (35 gigs!!!). I use NI stuff all of the time and would like their library to be on my Mac in full.

The only downfall is that my Waves authorization will be lost since it's on the 80gig drive. I may have to iLok it from this point forward. Not a real issue, as I am picking up a Powerbook or Macbook Pro for location work and can then use the Waves stuff on both machines. I can live with that situation. But it'll be some time before I'll be able to run Waves again on my machine.

Why are you loosing your 80GB drive? Can't you just add the 2nd drive and keep the 80GB in there as well? You should be able to have two drives in there (SATA I believe). And the Glyph 120gig FW NET Drive is external, no?

Sure you can partition the 250 drive. That's what I do so I can zero out a partition after a complex session is archived. Clean space for the next client.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that I also have an internal 120 gig SATA aside from the 80gig and Net drive.

I use the 120gig internal for recording and iTunes. Picking up a 250gig to replace my 80gig OSdrive will allow me to use the 120 internal for recording and the Netdrive FW120 for backup. The 80 gig will be cased up and used via FW for backup or as the first record drive for my laptop down the road. The 250 will be for boot, iTunes, sample libraries, etc.

Disk Utility Fix

Post by alozano »

Did you recently install the iTunes, Quicktime, Safari update? If so you're having the same problem I and many other mac users were having about a week ago. The fix is quite simple. You need to find your "receipts" folder under ~/library/receipts and remove all iTunes packages except for the iTunesX.pkg. This will allow you to repair permissions once again. While I'm at it if anyone else reads this, I'm having issues with AudioDesk 2 crashing randomly and I wonder if it has to do with the Quicktime update? It seems that AudioDesk 2 was crashing while Quicktime 6.0.4 was open so I downloaded a reinstaller from apple that removed the latest version of Quicktime and intalled an older version. However, now iTunes wants a newer version of quicktime to play video. Just a minor annoyance but any insight would be helpful. Thanks. And I hope that fix will work for anybody having that problem.
