Oh man, they're in Oakhurst (14 miles below the south gate of Yosemite Natl. Park). My wife has relatives there and property that still doesn't have city water. Internet speed must be at the tin cans over string speed about now.

It's bad enough here in the Silicon Valley where everybody has been told to shelter in place and work from home. My DSL is being shared by a few hundred thousand more neighbors right now. Large parts of the infrastructure has never been upgraded from copper—including where I live, 2 miles from HP, Apple and Google. I recently had to fight my ISP to lower my bill as I am unable to get 50% of their advertised speeds—just not available to my neighborhood. There's a corridor through the valley, walking distance to HP & Apple, where your only choices are 720k dial up or 5m satellite. It suuuuuuuuuucks!!!!!!!!!!!!! :smash:

Anyway, thanks for the tip!

Free Kontakt instruments from 8dio, FluffyAudio, Waves Facto

Post by mikehalloran »

Some of us with time on our hands might want to explore new sounds. Some are the following are always free while others are free for a limited time.

All require Kontakt. I’m having fun listening to the sample tracks on many of these pages.

8dio Click on On the House
https://8dio.com/

With FluffyAudio, not all the free instruments are on the Freebies page—look at all of them. I find Bamboo Xaxophone particularly interesting. https://www.fluffyaudio.com/

Waves Factory. Kontakt instruments. https://www.wavesfactory.com/free-kontakt-instruments/
Free Plugins https://www.wavesfactory.com/free-plugins/

If you want to avoid marketing email, stay away. I use another email address for such sites that does not show up on my mobile device.

I've been doing just that. Spitfire is another place to look if you haven't already. The "Lab" series is free and has some recent updates.

The portions relevant to Digital Performer have been removed from North Koran, so I hope they are doing South Koran.

Not free, but Audio Modeling titles are all currently 20% off. If you purchase from AudioDeluxe, you get an extra approx. 10% off as well.

The Audio Modeling VIs are not sample-based, and the result is some very expressive instruments that work really well with breath control and other cc. I have been coveting these VIs for a while, and just ordered the Flutes and the Solo String Collection. The other Woodwinds are also amazing, but I am still finding Wallander works well for my needs in that regard.

Reports are the strings may not be quite as good as Sample Modeling's stuff, but the cost of entry is significantly lower. I'm looking forward to adding these sounds to my pallet.

Note, there is a specific sticky thread for plugin deals (i.e., not free).

This isn't exactly an SQ-80 VI, but only some sounds from a ROM cart (remember ROM carts?) and the samples aren't anything to write home about, but it's free and a couple of the sounds aren't as terrible as the rest. I would love a decent SQ-80 VI that recreates that amazing synth.

The AU version didn't work but the VST one did.

No, the AU doesn't work. It wasn't even detected by AU validation. But the VST does and this is fun to play with. I found the keymaps are two octaves too low. Easy to fix, but odd. I was hoping the Ensoniq samples "Nomad Horns" would show up here, but didn't see or hear them.

PC users have had an emulator for the SQ-*) for years. I don't know how good it is and there might be a work around for that on the Mac (I've seen talk of it but I'm not gonna be the guinea pig). I loved programming sounds on that synth. I had that along with an ESQ-1, Mirage, and 5 (count 'em) EPS samplers (4 racks and 1 keyboard that Ensoniq provided free in exchange for screen credit). The buttons on the racks would always break and slip into the machine (hence the number of racks they sent). With an attached HD they loaded like lightening. They also send me the entire library of their disks, every last one. I eventually gave the KBD, HDs, disks, Mirage rack and HD, and road cases for all that to a student composer I was mentoring. Not even a thank you! Sold the SQ-80 on eBay for about $400.

I do hope that "composer" is flipping burgers today, but I digress.
