If DP shows the beach ball...

just an update on this. as i said before, i often get the beach ball temporarily. i went into the "activity monitor" and took a "sample" but it's all double dutch to me.
a big long list of gobbledygook....
however, taking some of the advice above, i quit my "yahoo widget engine" and also some Last.fm scrobbler stuff i have installed and performance seems to be so much better.
i can't believe i didn't quit these things before when working on music.
moral of the story for anyone experiencing slowness, just because it doesn't show up as an active "open" application, doesn't mean it's not sucking resources and a lot of this stuff is easily quit-able.

Can I do something to be able to stop the beachball so I can save my work?

It is a 12 year old thread for Tiger OS, so perhaps there are things that might not apply to your OS?

But I feel you. You've got work, you want to save, DP is crashed, and you're wondering what your options are.

I'm no expert. But DP has always been pretty crashy for me. Please take these suggestions with a grain of salt, and you may want to wait until more qualified people chime in.

1. Wait. Sometimes it finishes whatever brain fart it's engaged in, and you get things back. But it is rare.

2. You switch over to finder and do a force quit of DP (from the Apple menu). You hope that a "rescue" version of your project shows up and you can access some of your work.

3. If your system isn't responding, you may need to do a forced restart. I think the same possibility of a rescued project file might still be possible, but I'm not sure.

You might want to post your question in a fresh new thread, as this old thread might not get looked at.

If you have Auto Save (been a part of DP for a number of years now) enabled, you won't lose too much work. Since DP10.11 is new to me, I currently have DP autosaving every five minutes. Although it hasn't been crashing often (time stretching a bunch of stuff is when it has happened for me), when it does, you'll be thankful for Auto Save.

If the last Auto Save is more recent than your last manual Save, when you go to open the project after re-starting DP, DP will tell you there is a more recent version and ask if you want to open it . If you choose to open the Auto Save version , DP will require you to re-name it before it opens.
