direct hardware playthrough, gone? Mixer confusion
so.. I have been using 4.6.11 for 17 years and recording many many many bands. I figured it was time to get modern so I bought DP 10 and a new mac and a 16a. I figured it would be a real easy switch with lightning-fast processing as a bonus. Not so. I can't make the system give me live monitoring. It is 100% operator error but I can't seem to figure it out.
(I monitor and mix through a hardware desk with all external stuff) Im OTB all the way. Im currently trying to get acquainted with the gear at my house before i take it to my recording space (no internet there)
MOTU tech support has been helpful but with a jump so big (4.6 to 10) I am feeling lost. Short of them coming and holding my hand I'm not sure what to do.
I have been using this software for 17 years so I'm not new to it, I just can't seem to get that "ah ha" moment to replace the old hardware playthrough. They took a simple thing and made it complex with multiple layers of mixers.
Any thoughts would be welcome
thanks, DD

I’m in your boat, have said many things about it. Search my posts. Short version is I added another patchbay to get a mult on the way to the converter for live monitoring with a console. This after i built a really complex AVB mixer template to cover all bases: it’s just an overly complex PITA for an analog console user to manage. DHP is the best answer, and it’s just not in the cards.

Re: direct hardware playthrough, gone? Mixer confusion
Indeed, Doug has banged on about it for years (since the AVB line dropped), and I agree 100% with him.
A few years ago a MOTU tech said it might be possible, with a bit of work, to programme the firmware to be able to implement DHP, but nothing seemed to come of it despite my and Doug's periodically raising the issue over at GS.
As in Doug's case, I'm lucky that employing a (in my case, small) mixer for realtime monitoring is something I've always done anyway, using its direct channel outs to feed an interface. Only problem is that I'd prefer DP to determine when I do and don't hear live input, which is what DHP did; it acted according to your live-monitoring settings in DP.

Do you mean the memories of complaining about the lack of DHP in new MOTU I/Os? Yeah, those were good timesTimeline wrote:Boy, this brings back memories.

It looks like UA’s new DAW, LUNA has DHP (and then some) for owners if their interfaces. I think MOTU made a mistake by abandoning the idea....FAIK it’s not possible with AVB I/Os, but it’s still a bummer. Without DHP for DP there’s tons of inconvenient choices other than MOTU interfaces.

I totally agree. It's such a simple concept.dix wrote:Do you mean the memories of complaining about the lack of DHP in new MOTU I/Os? Yeah, those were good timesTimeline wrote:Boy, this brings back memories.I used an Ensemble as a DAC front end to my 2408mk3 for about ten years to keep DHP.

Re: direct hardware playthrough, gone? Mixer confusion
Thanks Guys, Im considering replacing the 16a with two 828x units which would give me 20 i/o (assuming they can each hook to their own independent TB port) I can hook my AI-3 to one of them via lightpipe for 4 more at 96k.
Sweetwater guy was saying lightpipe between the 828x units would be be more stable but that only gives me 18 i/o (no AI-3 and only 8 from the second 828x) He's seen it be jumpy in a few cases.
MOTU says it will work fine coming from different ports.

Re: direct hardware playthrough, gone? Mixer confusion
A apologize for piggybacking my question on this thread but it sounds like it might be the same issue. I'm hoping someone can verify this with a simple yes or no. If it's not the same issue I'll create a new thread for my post.
My question:
I'm using a UA apollo input device and the manual says to disable software monitoring so that it doesn't get a double signal. But I don't see anywhere to disable the software monitoring. And when I change the buffer size I can hear the latency vary, so I'm inclined to think software monitoring is on. Automatic latency compensation is off. Is this the same issue the OP is having and there is simply no way to turn it off?

If you are using Digital Performer with an external mixer, or via the hardware-based CueMix DSP monitoring features in your MOTU audio interface, you might choose to monitor in the external hardware instead of through Digital Performer. In this scenario, or any situation in which you do not need to monitor the incoming audio via the outputs of the audio interface connected to your computer, disable Audio Patch Thru.
