DP with Native Instruments FM8

Post by BonDarker »

MacBook Pro
OS 10.12.6
DP 10 (although this issue goes back a few generations of DP)

I'm stumped! I've spent the best part of the day looking on line — all over — for any instructions or commentary to answer my question and so far— 0 zip! Nota... Maybe someone here can offer an insight.

Here's my question for those who may load FM8 into DP

If I load an instance of FM8 and choose outputs for the MIDI tracks to play FM8, I am offered the usual 16 assignment tracks; just like an instance of Kontakt, MachFive 3, or EZDrummer/Superior Drummer 2, etc., for that matter. However, in Kontakt, Mach5-3, or EZD, when the instrument opens there are locations to call up instruments within the V-Instrument to fill any of those 16 Instrument slots.
Not so with FM8 Unless I've overlooked a function...
MAYBE I HAVEN'T FOUND THE SECRET FOR WHERE THE OTHER 15 Instruments CAN BE LOADED IN FM8???
Sure, I can still assign 16 or more MIDI track to a single instance of FM8 but regardless of what MIDI channel I assign a new MIDI track to in FM8, it will only play the one patch/sound in the one instance of FM8.

This seems to be how FM8 opens for me, anyway. If I want another FM8 instrument to sound along with the first, I need to create/load a new instance of FM8 and assign MIDI track(s) to it as FM8-2.

I suppose this may rest more on the FM8's structure than DP, but because I am a long time MOTU user, I figured someone else out there may know what's going on. AND it maybe as simple as, "That how it works! FM8 does not set up the same as other VIs."

Thanks in advance and HAPPY NEW YEAR 2020

I had no idea FM8 was multi-timbral in any way, shape or manner. I thought it was a single synth instrument (like MOST synths).

All the others you mentioned are multi-timbral - that is, they can contain several instruments or sounds within a single instance. Not so with MOST synth VST's. The vast majority can be addressed by any MIDI channel, true, but only produce one sound per instance.

Remember that each instance uses a single core. Just because you can load multiple instruments into an instance doesn’t mean you should. Using multiple instances lets the OS balance the load among the cores.

Well, okay then. I get the picture. Perhaps DP simply presents the multitimbral assignment instrument option when installing a new V-Instrument, regardless of whether the instrument is multi-timbral or not.

So, now I know. And I appreciate the prompt feedback and instruction.
I wish all life's questions were so easily and quickly answered :-)

Thanks, mike and terry
