New Macbook power comparison to G4

Post by IIIGmusic »

Hey all,

I've been considering upgrading from my G4 DP 1.25ghz, fully blown, to a new G5 Quad. Portability is something I've always wanted, but the now "last" gen PB's weren't as powerful as my G4 DP, which I push to edge of the cliff on nearly every session I do(high track counts, VI's, etc...). After reading the specs on the new MacBooks, is it safe to assume that they are more powerful than my desktop G4? Or should I stay with my orginal plan and grab the Quad? Obviously, the Quad is the most powerful of all the beasts, but if I can have more power than my current setup AND be portable this may be a better option. Any advice is helpful.

Thanx!

It is safe to assume when

* all software you run is Universal Binary. In processor-intensive applications the key word is "optimization". All software companies try to release first UB versions ASAP after that next releases will probably be even faster because they have had time to optimize MacIntel apps.
* get full 2GB RAM and 7200rpm internal disk plus of course some fast FW400 box with Oxford Chipset and a fast HD for streaming media. Or get ExpressCard SATA interface and attach external SATA drive or array.

The main consideration is if you really need portability. If not, then you can get more horsepower for the same money. Quads are indisputably faster than MacBooks. Mac book with UB software will be faster than G4 setups.

I have MacBook 1.83GHz with 2GB RAM and 7200rpm 100GB HD in order becasue I need to get portable. Not much choice here...
