Interface clicking after about 2mins

Post by Prime Mover »

I've noticed this on two different computers, with two different interfaces, with two different versions of DP in the last 4 months. After about 2mins of recording (or simply monitoring) an interface input, it starts clicking and hiccuping, almost like a scratched CD, and gets worse from there. If I reboot the audio system, it goes back to normal. I'm not exhibiting this yet in any other software outside of DP.

These are generic interfaces, one is a high-end SoundDevices MixPre3, and the other is a bottom-end Behringer 1/4" stereo line interface. I'm assuming both use generic USB drivers (I'm not very well versed in USB driver systems). What could be causing this?

I should mention that this latest hiccup is with a “Trashcan” MacPro (2013). But I did have this problem with the MixPre3 a few months back on my new MacBookPro 2019... however I just did a bunch of recording last week with no issues.

Update: Tried it with my MixPre3 (into MacPro), and just as bad as the Behringer. No problems that I can hear of in other programs, just Digital Performer. It sounds like a Clock Sync issue to me, but I can only select "Built-in Output" as my clock mode, if I select anything else, it goes back.

UPDATE2: The problem is 100% DP. I've developed a very stupid workaround that Soundflowers in the USB source into DP (from a tow-block Max/MSP patch). This is the dumbest thing I've ever had to do. Strange that DPs handling of Soundflower seems to be more stable than basic USB!

SoundFlower has a SLIGHT latency, seeing that it's a 15yo+ protocol, there's some newer ones out there like the offerings of Rogue Amoeba, I'll check them out.

I’d call MOTU on this one; expect software or hardware conflict. Since I always monitor via hardware mixer, I have not experienced your issue, but would expect that this board would be on fire if it were common.

Didn’t these issues get resolved via an OS update?
I hope so, but I was still reading reports of this just a few weeks ago.
