Motif MX49 into DP8 via USB

Post by rogerhewett »

Hi,

I'm running DP8 on a 2013 MacBook Pro, (Mac OS 10.9.5). I know it is all a little outdated, but it's functional. As a traveling musician, I'm trying to keep a portable system down to the bare minimum. I recently acquired a Yamaha MX49 to replace my Arturia controller , with the hopeful understanding that the internal Motif sounds would also be transmitted via the USB output on the keyboard directly to the USB input on the Mac, thus eliminating the need for a separate interface/audio cables.

However, having now experimented with the setup, it appears to not be possible. MIDI data is transferring perfectly, but not the audio. If it is possible, maybe somebody here could explain how to assign an audio channel, with the correct input/output.

If it is not possible, it would be great to at least have it confirmed!

I also use a host of libraries (Kontakt/Ivory) etc. with no problem (MIDI, Instrument/Freeze) It would be a shame to require separate audio interface and audio cabling simply to be able to access the internal keyboard sounds.

I posted on the Yamaha site but to no avail.

Many thanks for your expertise,

Roger Hewett

Took a quick look at the manual; it appears that Audio can be transmitted via USB. Assuming you have the Yamaha driver software installed on your computer; check the manual. There appear to be some software options that you need to enable.

Thank you HCMarkus,

It was precisely the quote in the manual that prompted me to go for the keyboard. I do indeed have the driver installed.

One Yamaha site brashly states "Add to this that the MX can act as its own AUDIO and MIDI interface with a simple USB cable. and you now will be able to create music right at home..."

I'm seeing the problem being the setting up of a MIDI channel, which works fine, with corresponding audio channel. The latter doesn't have the MX or USB as an input option.

Is anybody here recording audio from any keyboard directly into DP through USB?

Thank you!

In DP go to the Setup menu>Open Audio MIDI Setup. AMS has two windows. Display the Audio Devices window.

Any external audio devices are first seen in this window. If the Motif is not listed you probably need a driver from Yamaha. If the Motif is listed as an audio device, quit AMS.

In DP go back to the Setup menu>Configure Audio System>Configure Hardware Driver. In this window you will see the built-in I/O of the computer and you should also see the Motif listed. Command click to select both the Motif and the built-in audio outputs.

I don't know if you'll have any sample rate issues. A long time ago I worked with a Korg that had built-in optical out and only worked at 48 kHz. You may also have to set the Motif as the clock master device.

Hi Dave,

Thank you so much for your guidance. Sorry for the tardy response...I have only just found the time to try your suggestions. But using them as a 'trial & error' crap-shoot, I achieved some success.

Still not certain about assigning MIDI ins/outs versus audio, but I managed to see and record audio directly through USB without an interface.

Thank you so much!

Best,

Roger
