Can I have two versions of DP on the same disc?

Post by gavspen »

Hi all,

Is it possible to have DP8 and DP9 installed in the same start up disc and have then both run smoothly? The reason being, of course, to check that all my various plugins and stuff work well with it before committing.

I think I used to do this with all upgrades but have the feeling I stopped because one time it didnt work right and things got a bit messy!

I know, I know, we're up to DP10 now, but baby steps....

Absolutely! In fact, You can two version of the same version of DP running on the same machine at the same time. Just duplicate the app (it should rename as Digital Performer-1 or something like that.

Ta da!

Whether the same or different versions, be careful about saving presets since they are likely sharing the same folder and you could overwrite a saved preset. Also, different versions of DP sometimes require different components that may not be compatible with the other versions. Most memorable was DP 6, which trashed a DP 5 component, so after installing DP 6 I couldn't use DP 5 again until a kind soul sent me the file in question. Once I replaced that, DP 5 was fine. Of course, DP 666 was deleted and never run on my machines again.

BTW, I still have the box it came in... I should have seen the writing on the uterus wall!

Well, ok, that's kind of what I'm afraid of!! You're saying that's not the case with DP8 and DP9?

Say it isnt so!

I haven't heard of such a conflict between those two. If both are already installed then it would be easy to find out. frankly, I didn't like DP 8 very much. Loved DP 9 and I'm married to DP 10. Really a great version, IMO.

We would but we can’t agree on which reverb to use. Oh wait, Proverb!

See y’all in the Fall.

Shared components are overwritten by whichever version was installed last. Certain DP 9 functionality is no longer available after 10 is installed. Once 9 is reinstalled, parts of 10 are disabled and so on.

There’s far less difference between 9 and 8 in that regards. Some users find no problem switching back and forth; others do. YMMV

Ay yay yay. Oh well, guess I'll just give it a shot and hope.

If I screw things up I just reinstall 8 then, is that about it? Do I have to uninstall 8 first?

Thanks all.

In the case of DP 6 reinstalling DP 5 didn’t fix it and it was pre-TimeMachine days, so restoring from a backup wasn’t as easy. Frankly, I’d just install DP 9 and forgetaboutit. Better yet, DP 10.

Yeah, well, I'd love to, of course. If only it were that simple.

I have a plug I use all the time live, and for some weird reason, in DP9 there is latency when using it. No good. Never happened before. I just got a plug that I hope will replace the one I cant use with DP9, and I want to try it out.

Now, I have DP9 on separate startup disk from DP8, but I recently upgraded that (DP9) drive to Yosemite (yeah, yeah, yeah, I'm in the Stone Age) and found out that Yosemite and a card I have in my computer are incompatible, so I cant use the Yosemite disk (which has DP9 on it) as a start up any more, without opening the damn thing up and taking out the card. Still with me?

So, I want both DP8 and DP9 on the same (Mavericks) disk, so that I can switch between them, which used to be easy when I could use both disks as boot drives, but which now is a PITA since I have to take the card out to start up from the Yosemite disk (which is where DP9 is at the moment).

It never ends, does it? :(

I know this is more information than you wanted; I just felt like sharing.

Sounds truly complicated and quite frustrating. I hope you get this ironed out.

That's exactly it.

Both will install as Digital Performer. Rename the 8 folder as Digital Performer 8.07. When you install 9, rename that folder as Digital Performer 9.52 (if that's the version you are using). The dot . is important in the file name, apparently, or the folder will be overwritten. Subsequent installs will be also named Digital Performer — go ahead and trash them after installing. Your Digital Performer 8.07 and Digital Performer 9.52 folders will remain. You can make alias shortcuts to both in the toolbar.

Again, the latest installer will overwrite shared resources in a different folder. So, if you have both 8 and 9 working properly, good for you. If not, you know what to do.

Because of a client I had using DP 7.24, I played that game with 9.02 and 7.24 (one wouldn't run 64 bit plugs while the other wouldn't run 32 bit only plugins). When I upgraded to High Sierra and 7.24 would no longer run, I cut that guy loose till he upgraded to DP 9.
