HS security update 2019-002 10.13.6 fails
Hi........
Last Friday, I did what I usually do when security updates come out, hit "Install" in the App Store and walked away for the weekend.
Came in this morning and BOTH my 2016 MacBook Pro and my late-2013 Mac Pro booted into a full-screen text log and a dialog sheet that said "The macOS installation couldn't be completed."
Re-booted—same story.
Zapped NVRAM, reset SMC, rebooted—same story.
Booted into safe mode, did a little research and found I'm not alone: https://www.mac-forums.com/forums/macos ... 3-6-a.html
Still in safe mode, launched the App Store (took for-ev-er) and re-downloaded the updater. It's a really weird update, restarts the machine four times during installation and launches a setup screen when it finally launches, but that seemed to fix my laptop. Trying it on my Mac Pro now.
Never had so much trouble with an updater from Apple. Anyone else who's running High Sierra seeing this?

April Fools?
I'm still on Sierra, so have nothing to offer than my snarkiness. Hope you get it sorted quickly.

I'm running Sierra and had a similar problem with the security update. So I reverted to a backup. It's a scary situation, made all the worse by the fact that this is a "security" update.Rick Cornish wrote:Hi........

Re: HS security update 2019-002 10.13.6 fails
UPDATE…
I'm back in business after re-installing the update from Safe Mode.
Good to know it isn't affecting everyone. And it's good to know I could hit up Apple support, if I couldn't get through it on my own.
Nevertheless, this was a very strange and (in my experience) unprecedented takedown of two systems. I'll continue to advise friends on HS to not run this update if you're in the middle of a critical project or on deadline. And I guess I need to stop taking these updates for granted.

Apple has changed the content of this update and its number, very recently; but I did not dare to do it _

Re: HS security update 2019-002 10.13.6 fails
I've had this happen with two security updates in the recent past on my older iMac; the first one for HS and one for Sierra. Seems the installation fails somewhere, but stays as an active update on your drive, and as your startup partition, so whenever you boot or restart, the system finds itself in the middle of an update which then fails. Going into safe mode and changing the startup drive from whatever the update is to the regular startup drive gets you running again.
On the Apple community boards I saw this was reported by a lot of people. My assumption is that Apple doesn't test these things on systems that are no longer supported (my iMac is "Obsolete") and that we use these updates at our own risk on these machines. I haven't done the most recent HS security update on the iMac or my MBP and probably won't.
The Mojave update on the other hand, addressing the same security issues, was OK on a 2012 Mini, a 2015 Macbook, and a 2018 Mini.
The app Mactracker tells you whether your Mac is Supported, Legacy, or Obsolete. The Legacy designation appears to be a nice way of telling you it's time to send out invitations to the retirement party and check out the pension options.

Re: HS security update 2019-002 10.13.6 fails
It installed a firmware update on both of my wife’s Macs, a 2011 iMac and her 2015 Air. The Air took forever and I had to reboot before it would complete. The iMac took about 15 minutes and was straightforward — it rebooted twice but did so automatically without my getting involved.
My 2010 is still running 10.13.3 and I’ve not seen this update for that iMac.
