I swore I was going to get Vienna Ensemble Pro the next time it went on sale.
Well 7 is on a preorder sale now!
I know 6 came with three licenses.
7 comes with one license, and then you puchase additional licenses as needed.
My main computer is a 12 core Xeon 2.93 Mac Pro.
I have two computers that might be decent slaves. One is a Xeon 3.33ghz 6-core Mac Pro. The other is a 3.4 ghz quad core i-7 Windows 10 computer
I understand I can get a benefit by running server on my main machine.
I think to start, I would go with just one slave computer
So I need two licenses, correct?
I have one E-licenser key so I know I need to get a second one of those too.
Thanks in advance!
Can somebody explain Vienna Ensemble Pro licensing to me?

Re: Can somebody explain Vienna Ensemble Pro licensing to me
The VEP Server mixer application that loads all your plug ins requires the Vienna Key or E-Licenser.
The VST, AU, MAS plug in that runs in your DAW does not. So to run two computers with one instance of the VEP server on one and DP on the other you only need one license.
If you decided to run VEP on the same computer as DP, (there are reasons to do this), and wanted to run it on another computer as well you would need two licenses.
So again, it's the amount of instances of the Server/mixer that hosts VSTs that will determine the amount of E-licensers you need and the amount of licenses you should buy, but for two computers with one instance of VEP Server, you need only the one license that it comes with.

M2 Studio Ultra, RME Babyface FS, Slate Raven Mti2, NI SL88 MKII, Linnstrument, MPC Live II, Launchpad MK3. Hundreds of plug ins.

Michael: Thanks so much, that clarifies everything. Really appreciate it!

That is what I have read, but my search on the net didn’t really come up with much concrete. I do recall reading threads here from long long ago that VEP was more efficient at hosting plug-ins than DP.
Are those the reasons to run VEP server on the same computer ?
Thanks!

Re: Can somebody explain Vienna Ensemble Pro licensing to me
For me, the best reason to run it on the same machine would be so that you could keep all your instruments loaded in their current state when you load another project. You could go between several DP projects, but keep your VI template static, so all DP really has to load is your MIDI. If you use really giant templates like some do around here, it might be really useful.
I haven't used VEP in a couple years.. my 12-core machine handles a lot by itself and with DP and V-Racks, I've created a much more streamlined approach for my larger templates. But I have done some trailer music in the past that could not have been accomplished without VEP and at least one high powered secondary computer.

DP11, 2019 16-Core Mac Pro, OS 14 Sonoma , 64GB RAM. RME HDSPe MADI FX to SSL Alphalink to SSL Matrix console, and multiple digital sub consoles. UAD Quad PCIe. Outboard stuff.

Re: Can somebody explain Vienna Ensemble Pro licensing to me
HI Killahurts:
Yes having all my instruments loaded up that way would be great!
My 12 core Mac Pro has been pretty good as well with DP 9.52, but I have picked up some pretty heavy CPU intensive stuff in the last six months. I really don't see getting a new mac for a long while. but I have these extra computers so I think VEP will be good for me.
I've also wanted to experiment with larger projects, so very good to hear about your big trailer projects.
I did get VEP 7 pre-ordered, was $158.65 at AudioDeluxe with the "membership discount". Vienna gives you access to VEP 6, so I can go ahead and get started with that.
Audiodeluxe have additional licenses on sales as well for basically $72.00 so i will pick one of those up today. Then see how it goes with one slave and possibly pick up another license later.
Thanks so much for the help, I REALLEY appreciate it!
