Laptop Limbo

Post by bayswater »

A few weeks ago, Apple issued a security update for High Sierra, applied to 10.13.6. I ran it, but it never completed (after about 12 hours). I shut down and restarted and got a startup screen saying that the update cannot be completed, look at the thousands of pages of error logs, figure out what the error is, and fix it. I was unable to do this.

It was possible to access System Preferences, and change the startup drive from the update image to the usual startup drive prior to the security update.

Now whenever I have to restart, I get the error message, and have to reset the startup drive. Meanwhile the security update has not been applied.

I'm a bit leery of simply applying the incremental update again. This is the second time an seemingly routine update has cause problems. The last time was ElCap release 0 which made my laptop completely useless and made a clean re-install necessary.

I'm wondering what the best approach would be. Perhaps finding a combo update for 10.13.6 would be the way to go.

At the risk of stating the obvious, have you run disk utility as well as done a safe boot and PRAM reset?

I had a similar issue on a laptop and downloading and installing the combo update fixed it.
