Bouncing VIs missing out some notes in DP 9.51

Post by jonnicholls »

Hello - I've recently been experiencing some odd bounces from Kontakt & VE Pro which have missed out notes from the selection, at what seems to be random. I'll select a sequence of MIDI notes on a single track and bounce to disk, only to discover that some of the ones have been missed from the bounce. If I repeat the process, different notes will be missing. This is intermittent and not consistent, and usually a restart of the computer sorts it, but I'd be interested to know if anyone's experienced anything similar. My workaround is to record the VI in real time, which is obviously time-consuming. Thanks in advance. Jon

The first thing to recommend is "isolating" large VI instruments into their own instance of the VI.IOW, if you have large or highly scripted instruments, they should be the only instrument in that instantiation of the VI. This forces DP to use multithreading and allows the Mac to divide the CPU load across several cores. The best way to think about it is that each large instrument will have it's own fader in the mixing board. Smaller instruments can be used as usual.

That said, if there are a lot of complex VI and a lot of notes and controllers, BTD may not be able to keep up and real time may be the only option. Also, try different buffer settings!

Sometimes, missing notes, or audio, or fades, are related to heavy processing plugins. Ozone comes in mind.
Many workarounds. First one is record in real time, instead of bounce.

9.51 has issues. Is there a reason you have not updated to 9.52?

Thanks for the very helpful responses - the tip about isolating large VIs as single instances is especially interesting. I'd been stacking up multi-timbral instances of things like Forzo and Novo in Kontakt, so I'll try using single instances instead. I do very much like DP's ability to have effective multi-timbral instances of Kontakt (one of things I find slightly irritating about Logic, for example, is having to have multiple single instances) but the info about the relationship between single instances and multithreading in DP was new to me.

Thanks also to Mike for pointing out that 9.52 was out! For some reason it hadn't popped up on my 'check for updates automatically' menu.

Seasons greetings to all.

You can thank MagicD Dave Roberts for the tip on multi threading, and a whole lot more (like DP itself)!
