Motu 828mk2 Firewire

I am a total newbie to Computer recording. I have a Motu 828mk2
I can't seem to get it to work with any thing. GB2, Audio Desk, M-audio
Live Lite 4. I am using a Mac mini 1.4GHz 1 gig of ram. The fireware
on the Motu is Ver. 1.01. I can select the driver in the Prefs of all the apps. but no sound. GarageBand the volumes are grayed out, same with the Audio MIDI Set up window. I can select the motu 828 for input and output but the volume sliders for each channel are grayed out. I installed the driver for OS X from the website (driver 1.3.0). Just pluged my guitar into Mic/Guitar in 1 and firewire to the mac. No other outboard efx are involved. Am I missing something?

there are some updated drivers on http://www.motu.com
try installing them...
