If you want to zoom when the mouse is not at the play head, you would use a different command. There are a few options. One is to select an area with the alt key pressed. There are a couple of dozen shortcuts for zooming in various ways. I`m sure you can look these up. Using the wheel to zoom could create problems because if it is over a value field it willl change the value.

Well, selecting areas involve clicking and dragging - which is exactly what I want to avoid while using a touchpad. Option+click does zoom in (same as z+opt+click) but opt+shift+click (doesn't matter if Zoom Tool or not) does not zoom out all the way, just to some extent. Is there a setting for "Stop Zooming Out At This Level"? (there is not). Also clicking away like an idiot to zoom to some level beyond 2 clicks – awesome!
I have looked the shortcuts up in several places (literally none with any mousing in Commands palette – also you can't search Commands by the actual commands? How rare.) This far I have stated several times what I want to be able to do and that no amount of RTFM-ing (or anyone else for that matter) is getting any closer, so please, some real advice, not "RTFM" (because I R the F out of the M before I get on any forums).
Using the wheel to zoom would not create problems in the Sequence, because there are no value fields (also, mouse focus - so you zoom to where your pointer is pointed at). If you're mousing around on the Mixer tab (for instance), then the wheel zoom should not work, of course.
So hereby hoping to get the awesome MIDI powerhose that DP undoubtedly is, I got a clusterfuck of bad UX design For a program this OLD I hoped they've ironed out all that •••• but this is just....
Seems one must resort to the help of external apps that can map gestures (or a scroll to keystrokes) and whatnot... yay more apps to perform a most basic feature.

I assume you know this is not a MOTU run forum -- just a bunch of users. It says something to that effect at the top of the page. So, other than promising to hack the code and make DP work the way you want, it's not clear what anyone here can say in reply to your rants. DP is clearly not meeting your needs and probably never will. Why would you buy an app that is so clearly different from what you want?

You are better off using something else. The rest of us can just wallow in our ignorance.

What I did was assigned the vertical and horizontal zoom commands to my mouse buttons and wheel. I can zoom all day long in and out with no issues.

I was thinking in the lines of using the USB Overdrive app to map arrow+cmd keystroke to mouse wheel...

If you go to the commands window, and search "zoom" you'll see the basic commands (and key combinations) for various zoom functions.

For years, I used my wheel to zoom by assigning the key-combination for zoom-in-horizontally to a press-foward-roll and the key-combination for zoom-out-horizontally to a press-backward-roll.

I recently got a new mouse with more controls on it, and found that the press roll on this mouse was difficult to control (which is a problem with the mouse and not DP), so I went to using buttons on the mouse which are plentiful. I use a pair of buttons to scroll in/out horizontally, and another pair to zoom vertically.

You can try the press-roll and a modified-press-roll for horizontal and vertical zooming respectively and see if it works on your mouse.

I should mention that I use SteerMouse as my driver, so I can customize everything very effectively. In system preferences, SteerMouse has a pane for configuring global things as well as per-app things. There is a tab called "chords" which lets you assign actions to combinations of things like button+button, or button+wheel, etc. So you can set up lots of different actions. There is also special software for trackpads that allow you to program gestures, but I don't love the trackpad so I don't bother with those. A few power-users here swear by the magic-trackpad (2?)

The original MT was good but Magic Trackpad 2 rules.
The only downside is that it doesn’t work over Yosemite or earlier.

Yeah, mapping the scroll to zoom shortcut keys works with SteerMouse (USB Overdrive - not so well).

Does anyone have an idea why it's not possible to map any mouse keys to anything in the Commands palette? I'ts like it's not even there...

It's a good question, i.e., can mouse inputs be "standardized" and included as an option to trigger a command directly within DP?

The workaround-- using a device driver and preference pane to intervene-- works well. Fortunately, SteerMouse is incredibly versatile-- and allows application specific commands. It also let's you fine tune timings which is essential for scrolling commands.

I tried using Logitech's Mac software to configure the mouse, but I vaguely recall it was unable to do something I needed (don't remember what). SteerMouse is a great product with great support.

Use a Logitech MX Master Mouse; it's software allow me to map things in a useful manner... love the side wheel for left-right scroll. The main wheel is set to spin freely (no clicks), so I get real, physical inertia response. Apple's Magic Mouse inertia drove me crazy, because it sent too many rapid-fire commands, causing DP to stumble visually.

I also have a Shuttle Xpress connected to my Mac Pro. Its Jog Dial is programmed to Zoom In (clockwise) and Out (counterclockwise). Very handy.

Got rid of my LTech Revolution mouse a couple of years ago. I’ll never go back to mice. MTPad2 is so much more intuitive to this piano player. Also keeps my hands from getting stiff by using the rodent.
