Recording MIDI CC for Plugin Automation

I am trying to record plugin automation using "Learn Mode".
I can record MIDI cc data from my controller onto a MIDI track with no problems.
I can use "learn mode" to assign that controller to control a parameter of a plugin, in this case its the frequency knob of soundtoys filter freq. That all works, and I can adjust the parameter in real time using my controller.
But then if I try to record that MIDI cc data after it has been assigned nothing gets recorded (if I delete the controller assignment cc data is recorded, but obviously it doesn't automate the plugin parameter anymore).

Is there something I'm missing that would allow me to assign a controller to a plugin parameter, record moves in real time and play them back?
