Using Outboard Gear with 896mk3 Hybrid and Pro Tools

Hello,
New to MOTU and really like my 896mk3 hybrid. I have hardware EQ's and Compressors I'd like to use with it as Hardware inserts in Pro Tools 2018.7 and I'd prefer to not even have to use CUEMix
Here's my dilemma, and i apologize in advance if I'm just missing something relatively simple.
I am connecting the output of the EQ to Input "5" on the MOTU and Input of EQ to Output "5" of MOTU.
I have a track already recorded in Pro Tools, when I select an insert I'm selecting "5" as I thought there was no stealing of inputs and outputs in the 896 as far as main outs etc. so they should match up 1 for 1 ( input 1 is output 1 etc. )
When I play the track there is no sound, and the meters do not move. I would expect meters 5 in and out to be getting a signal.
If I change the the insert to "7" I still don't get sound but the meters are showing activity on in and out "5"
So Im really not sure whats going on here. I had a similar problem with a PreSonus 1824 and i had to disable their software mixer, but I was able to use the hardware insert with no issue. I was not a fan of the PRE's on the 1824 and that's why I got the 896.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I prefer to be able to turn knobs and not use software inserts for some cases and I've spent a good amount of money for the 896 and my external hardware.

Support helped me out with this, seems the input and outs don’t line up as far as working with PT as hardware inserts

So what did you do to get this working, I'm trying to use my 896mk3 as my interface and as a hardware insert.
