I have four Evos... two 860s and two 850s. All have been solid, and the drives' reputations are stellar. Personally, don't feel the Pro versions' considerable extra cost is justified by the nominal performance gains. Endurance is not an issue unless you are constantly filling and wiping your SSDs.

And, yes, those Evo prices are very good, especially the 1TB version. I bought a 500GB Evo when it was briefly at the same price on Amazon a couple of weeks back. It's now my studio boot drive.

The NewEgg prices reflect the price drop on the Samsung web site. Yea, that's good. No reason to go through a reseller who can't (or won't) keep up.

The PRO has a market in enterprise servers but there's no reason for most of us to spend the extra $ for a tiny increase in performance, especially with the warranty dropping from 10 (850 PRO) to 5 years for the 860.

I have a number of 850 EVOs of various sizes in a number of machines. All are humming along nicely. The 860 is supposed to be better and various tests give it higher marks.

I don't buy under 2T anymore so that is my benchmark. I'd much rather gave an 860 EVO @ $398 with a 5 year warranty than a Micron 1100 @ $290 with no warranty at all. I see that the price on the Crucial MX500 has now dropped to $380

I hope to buy a 4T soon as I'm thinking of upgrading Komplete to Ultimate. Not enough room on my 2T for that and everything else.

I love it that prices are dropping when I'm in the market to buy.

You should try to enable Trim on all SSDs, but whether you can or not depends on the connection. Under macOS, a USB connection will probably not support Trim. eSATA should allow Trim to be used, and I think Thunderbolt will work, too.

You can’t TRIM external SSDs. TRIM is enabled from boot drives only. It’s part of the OS but is blocked by default if the startup routine detects that the it’s booting from a 3rd party SSD. You cannot enable or block it on external drives separately. If enabled on the boot drive the OS will TRIM SSDs connected via PCIe, SATA/eSATA, Thunderbolt and PCIe over Thunderbolt. Likewise, if booting from such an external, you will need to run sudo trimforce enable while booted in that drive for TRIM to take effect.

TRIM is not supported over USB including 2, 3, 3.1 and C. This makes a strong argument for using USB externals only for VIs and archival where constant Write/Rewrite is not an issue.

Thanks, Mike. Let me explain my application. First, I need to update my old cheese grater's boot drive. No issue there.

My second need is for a four drive dock that I use for DP projects that will be moved between two computers (one in my tracking space and the other where I mix - two separate rooms). It is currently populated with SATA spinners. It allows me to have all current clients on an easily portable device that I can move from one room to the other without copying files. It also allows me to recover older projects by simply popping in a client's drive that I have on the shelf. I was thinking that with the current pricing I might make the move to SSDs, replacing the spinners for projects moving forward.
