Re: How the iPad Pro *really* sucks? MID IN/OUT! UPDATE

Post by MIDI Life Crisis »

I really wanted to use the iPad for a reading of Dracula I’m scoring live on Sunday, but clearly that is not happening. It would seem pretty easy to get a great old time organ sounds from the iPad, and a lot less stuff to lug around. Oh well...

So my solution was to pull the two oldest synths I have out of mothballs and hook ‘em up to see if I could get away with less than an 88 note controller. I’m using a V-Synth (original) and a Yamaha DX-100 and they sound great together. I have the V-synth sending MIDI notes and controllers (no patch changes) to the DX, so I’ll have some autonomy over what sounds are playing on the DX. They are sharing a volume pedal, which is great for section under dialogue staying quiet enough. Where I only want the DX to sound, I play on that kbd. If I play the V-Synth I get both sounding, with a "silent" patch on the DX if I need to solo the V-Synth. There are 4 or 5 sound effects which I can program into the v-synth as samples triggered by certain keys, so I may bot even bring the damn ipad.

Thanks for the help. Here's a promo (I didn't do the sound for it):

GarageBand has 3 Hammond keyboards with adjustable draw bars but no church organ. There are plenty available, however.

For organ, would a non-weighted keyboard be acceptable? If not, there might still be a lighter weight alternative to your PC2/x.

My rig fits into two gig bags. One holds my keyboard, volume & sustain pedals and cables. Total weight is 9 Lb. The other is a small nylon briefcase containing the 12.9” Pro+keyboard cover, UGREEN hub, 2 chargers, music folder and cables for playing bass without the keyboard. Weight is 6 Lb. Add to that a small folding table (more convenient than a stand for me) < 5 Lb. and that’s it. I don’t use an iPad stand as I have no need but there are many styles. Since I must use a cane and don’t have a free hand, I need to make a second trip for my little table. Most anyone else can carry everything in one trip.

There are many VIs available for iOS. In addition, the latest build of GB has quite a few (you must be in GB to use them, however). With a setup like mine, the keyboard is a MIDI controller only and bus powered off the iPad—the chargers are for insurance if the iPad charge gets too low.

I don’t need a weighted kbd for this kind of gig but I e yet to find a decent solution to attaching a MIDI controller to the iPad Pro.

Thanks for the link. We’re still talking multiple devices in the article. I can get the iRig 2 to allow my PC2 keyboard to play most instruments so part of the problem is with my Roland controller kbd not working with the iRig. When it’s connected all I see is the MIDI in light blinking (probably active sensing being sent) but other notes and controllers are kaput.

I’ll have to save further experiments for a later date when I have free time. Thanks again for the link.
