MAS conflicting with Apple notifications?

Post by Helen »

Hi, I've searched here and elsewhere for this, and either my search terms aren't how other people describe this, or no one else has mentioned this problem.

Over the last few months I have noticed MAS quitting from time to time. It would reenable perfectly on the first try, but hey, that takes time. I couldn't quite figure it out, but I wasn't doing anything on a hard deadline, so while annoying, no big deal. Now I'm doing serious work, and am spending much more consistent time in DP, and I think I've figured it out. MAS quits when I get a notification accompanied by a system sound. I went in and disabled every notification I could and I've been running smoothly since. (Though for some reason Messages popped up a minute ago, and boom, MAS quit. I need to figure out why it notified me when I had told it not to.)

Also, aside from going in and disabling notifications for every durn application, is there a way to turn off all notifications? I have my iPhone and iPad if someone needs me. I don't need my Mac to let me know what the other devices are already telling me.

Anyway, if anyone else is having this problem, or has ideas about it, I'm all ears.

Um... yes, but I never thought to turn off notifications. I mean, like, when ANYONE likes ANYTHING on FB or Instagram, I must know immediately!!!! lol Not!

That would make sense, that a call from the OS might affect MAS adversely. In Mac OS Prefs, you can specify under sound where "SOUND EFFECTS" are to go, by which I think they actually me alerts. Mine default to the internal speakers, but alerts from other apps sometimes go to whatever the output is set to.

Another friend on this site just emailed me about this earlier today, so I'll send him a link to the discussion. Maybe he has info that might be relevant.

Regardless, I have my MOTU Track 16 drop out every so often and it's damn annoying. I always suspected the FW400 to TB cable from Apple, but have never been able to track it down. It just seems to happen every so often and I guess I need to pay more attention to what else is running now. I never thought that a process finishing in one app (with a beep tone saying so) could be the culprit, but I'll keep an eye on that.

Thanks for posting that. It's not an insignificant problem.

System Preferences>Notifications>Do Not Disturb? Maybe not in 10.11. I don't remember.

I never thought about notifications as the source of the problem. Tracking it down seems impossible here because it happens so infrequently. I've always assumed it was a MAS problem because it happens across a variety of interfaces, all versions of OS X at least back to 10.6, and on Windows 7.

You're welcome, glad to hear it may help folks, that's one reason I posted. Other folks here have helped me numerous times over the years, it's nice to be able to contribute. (It's also nice to hear that it's not just me, those are the long, frustrating fixes.)

I kinda lucked into it, it just so happened that I noticed that the one followed the other, I don't recall it usually being instant, but this time it was. I swore a bit at Apple, turned off my notifications, and have been running with only the one disruption since. Notifications without sound have caused no trouble.

Anyway, I'm interested in how turning off notifications works for others.
