Audio file names (labelling)

Post by Justin_K »

Hello clever people.

Can someone please assist?

When I print an audio track, I'd like that file to be named more precisely.

For example, if my chunk is called "New Tune", and the audio track is labelled 'Violin"
I'd like the audio file to be labelled "New Tune- Violin".

The default naming seems to be only the latter, in this case "violin", so If I'm exporting numerous audio files from different chunks, it is difficult to tell them apart.

Is there a way to include the chunk name in a file label without having to change it manually?
Also a time code label would be great too.

Thanks in advance :)

Not as far as I know. You could add a prefix to each track name before you record and that would do it. Still a manual process but at least once you've name the track, subsequent sound bites will be named properly.

Eg track one in new song is named “ns_violin”.
Track one in old song is named “os_violin”
Etc.

Thanks for the reply.

Yes I guess I could just type in my required name on every track title before I hit record, but I mainly want precise labelling when I print off audio from a orchestra of virtual instruments, and as I am working on a film there will be around 50 individual chunks each with at least 20 audio files that I have to label and export.

If you're bouncing to disk, you should be able to simple add the new suffix every time. DP will remember the previous suffix, but as far as automatically renaming to match the track names per instrument, the app isn't that smart.

You could do this quickly using the terminal once you're done. See this answer on stack overflow:

That won't inherit the track names AFAIK, just rename. And you don't need terminal to do batch renaming any longer. It's part of the Mac OS.

I never knew that… great tip, MLC

For the O/P…
1. Just highlight all your audio files in the Finder
2. Control-click (Mac) and select "Rename (X) items…"
3. In the resulting sheet, from the drop down on the left choose "Add Text"
4. From the drop down on the right, select "before name"
5. In the text field, enter the prefix you desire

Have you tried using templates? I’ve always used them on high track count cues. This alone may get you there. I also use Keyboard Maestro to auto rename many tracks or add to name right in DP in the Tracks window prior to and sometime post recording.

I never know what people mean by "print", as someone who worked in the actual printer industry for six years, and as I like the safety of always having an ACTUAL audio file for each track in a project (piece of mind, and more flexibility in when/what to mix and send to auxes).

If it's about avoiding repetitive typing for prefixes, I haven't reviewed the final few posts yet so maybe that's answered (and I can learn from that, as I don't know off-hand), but I can at least reassure you that if you locate the sound bite in the sound bites list, it is OK to rename it there, as long as it isn't protected on disc and you get blocked from doing so (unlikely).

As I use chunks for album projects, and often have similar instrumentation between one or more pieces (especially if it's pop/rock, which I don't do much of), then I do find it annoying that my generalized track names (in the main tracks overview) can make it hard to identify which song a track goes with, as they get unique numbers at the end but the only real hints are start/end time and tempo indicator for the audio file.

Sometimes I'll bounce individual files to send to someone who is collaborating, and I think that might be what you are referring to as "printing". That export window remembers the last thing you typed, as long as it is the same session (it starts from scratch on the next session), and I manually pre-pend the song title to stay sane if I am exporting/bouncing just the clarinet tracks (for example) for a few pieces at once and sending them all to the same person at the same time.

I don't mind doing the prefixes manually, but I can see how that wouldn't scale well if you're doing it for a lot of tracks and quite often, or if you want to export all tracks from a project as individual tracks (I suppose this can also be done via busses, on MIDI and/or unprocessed audio that hasn't yet been rendered via VI's and/or hasn't gone through its processing inserts/sends yet), and want the current chunk name to automatically be pre-pended to all of them.

I'll review the remaining comments later this week; this is a quick dip while eating lunch at work. I am in the process of trying to streamline and improve this process myself at the moment, so I hope to both learn and share over the coming days/weeks, as this is now a process that is a bigger part of my workflow than before.
