Original 828 usable?
Hi, haven't been on the forum for ages, I still have my old original 828 (not Mk2, the original) that I once used with DP3, mac OS 9, and early versions of OS X on my old G5. Sorry if the subject's been covered, I searched a bit and found little about the old 828 here. Probably because the original 828 is no longer supported or usable with current macs. I'm just wondering if there is any way to use the 828 with my MacBook Air which is an "early 2015" running OS 10.12.3 High Sierra according to the "about this mac" information. I still have the old G5, which actually works, and of course has a firewire port, but I'm curious to know if the 828 is compatible with the modern OS and MacBook, either with TB or USB. Thanks for any guidance you can offer.

Re: Original 828 usable?
There is no reason I know why the original FW 828 wouldn’t work through the Apple Thunderbolt to FW adapter. To eliminate one adapter, use an 800–400 cable to connect your 828 to the TB adapter.

Re: Original 828 usable?
I'm a bit late getting back to my own thread, thanks for responding guys. There's a page on the MOTU site that says the Current Version driver for my original 828 is: v1.02, but I'm not finding a download link. I'm a bit confused about how I go about finding the link for downloading it. I guess the "800—400 cable" adapts older FW cords to newer (800?) FW? and then I need to have a TB adapter too? Any suggestions on vendors of these cables/adapters? Thanks again for the help.

Re: Original 828 usable?
Use the Apple adapter. Amazon often has a better price than Apple. It is not recommended to use a 3rd party adapter. You don't need a Thunderbolt cable with this.
https://www.apple.com/shop/product/MD46 ... re-adapter
All MOTU Firewire devices run at FW400. The above adapter has a FW800 port. Although a 400-800 adapter at the end of a FW400 should work, many are not as secure as I'd like. Far better to use a 400-800 cable instead—one less thing to get in the way and possibly go wrong.

You will need the latest MOTU Audio drivers. Find your device, click on the arrow and download the driver appropriate for your OS.

For nearly everyone, it's v1.6.73220 but, for some users and systems, MOTU may recommend an older driver if there are issues with the latest one.

Re: Original 828 usable?
Thanks Mike! For some unknown reason when I went to the MOTU driver download page on my own, the "original 828" driver dropdown wouldn't display any download links. For some other unknown reason (not sure if they have fixed the links on the page that originally didn't work for me or what), when I used your link to the page, the dropdown for the old 828 is now showing links to multiple versions of the driver download. I downloaded v1.6.73220 (Release Date 2017-07-01). I'll try it out when I've got the appropriate connecting cables. Speaking of which, I'm a bit confused by your guidance—do I understand you to mean that I need both adapters you provided links to, the 9 pin Male to 4 pin Male Clear Firewire 800/400 Cable for IEEE 1394 devices on Amazon (currently unavailable according to Amazon) and the Apple TB to FW adapter? Or just the the Apple TB to FW adapter?

I have an original 828 connected to a 4,1 flashed to 5,1 and running High Sierra. It works.

1 adapter: Apple FW to TB (the little pigtail is all the TB cable you need here)
1 cable: FW400 to FW800

Re: Original 828 usable?
Mine is connected via FireWire. I only meant to confirm that High Sierra itself is not a problem.

Re: Original 828 usable?
I’m connected to a 2009 Mac Pro, so FireWire direct (FW 400-800 cable).

Re: Original 828 usable?
After a long hiatus, I finally got back to the recording effort with my newish MacBook Air and my old original 828 (mark I?). I don't have a current version of DP anymore, and I'm trying to learn Garageband. I'm using an elago 400 to 800 firewire adapter connected to a firewire to TB adapter. No audio interface is showing in the selected track's audio input drop-down menus in GBand, only "No input" or "Built-in microphone" (1 or 2). The TB input is not showing the 828 in the system prefs devices available for sound output or input, but the FW to TB adapter does show in the system hardware report. Have I bought the wrong hardware? If not, does anyone have any pointers/trouble-shooting tips that might help me to get this rig working? Thanks in advance for any help you guys can offer.
Edit: I just remembered that I had downloaded, but not installed, the MOTU Audio Installer v1.6 which I think you guys had directed me to do. So, I'll install it and see if that will be the answer.
