Crash on Load since 10.13.4

Post by rk21 »

When I try to load (random) projects (dp 9.51 and dp 8.07), just before the 'reading project' progress bar is done, DP crashes. I can not 'load' the session information into another session either. I thought this might have been a one-off with a certain project, but now it's been popping up on projects that once loaded fine before.

Crash log for those who can read it:

Sorry I guess I should have included list of things I've tried:

reinstall DP 9.51, load with earlier version of DP 9, reinstall 10.13.4, rename project/project folder, move project folder to different location/drive

Edit: I'm able to open the projects on my macbook pro running 10.13.4.... That is frustrating!

A likely guess is that it’s a plugin. Here’s how to start in Safe mode and what to look for.

Thanks for the tip on safe mode. That appears to work for opening the project. Now I just have to figure out what plugin is causing the issue.

You should wait until 10.13.5 is released, and maybe not even then. My experience was fine up to the 10.13.4, at which point the Finder became a buggy mess. Here, the Finder does too many strange things to be relied on. Late yesterday, there were four instances of the Finder running on my MBP before I gave up and shut down. I get messages from the Finder saying files, folder and servers it is displaying cannot be found, copying of files that never actually happens. A safe boot will fix thing temporarily.

One possibility I'm following is that some of these issues, e.g. the inability to find local servers is a problem with Little Snitch, the Finder, or incompatibility between the two.

I will not be updating past 10.13.3 on my main audio setup until I see these issues resolved.

Turned out to be the MAS version of the Altiverb 7 plugin. I have the VST version so I can work around it, but odd that it would cause the sessions to crash on loading.

Edit: What's even more odd, is that I can activate the plugin once the project is loaded (disabled on start). It only crashes on a if it's activated on a fresh start.

Edit 2: Updated Altiverb to 7.3.3 (was on 7.2.6) and that seemed to fix the MAS instance of the plugin issue.

Thanks for everyone suggestions!

Interesting. Do you have v. 4.03 or newer?

My issue with 10.13.4 is DisplayLink Drivers as I have posted in other threads. I looked at 10.13.5 Beta 4 today and it's still a no-go.

I do have the 10.13.3 complete installer zipped and can FTP or Dropbox that over (if you have 6G space in a Dropbox account — I don't). As I've posted elsewhere, if you have a version of High Sierra over APFS already installed and 10.13.4 doesn't work, reverting back to the older version takes a couple minutes—less if you've done it before.

I will not be updating past 10.13.3 on my main audio setup until I see these issues resolved.
Interesting. Do you have v. 4.03 or newer?

As I've posted elsewhere, if you have a version of High Sierra over APFS already installed and 10.13.4 doesn't work, reverting back to the older version takes a couple minutes—less if you've done it before.
And I have 10.13.0 and all the Combo Updates.

I might have been celebrating too soon. Although now I'm able to boot up the projects, it doesn't take long before I get a crash. When I disable the altiverb plugins the crashes don't occur...

Anyone else having issues with Altiverb 7 and the lastest DP & os?

Anyway to get the plugins to work without crashing my project?

Edit: VST version works fine. only MAS version is giving me issues. I run orchestral sessions and use the plugin for positional reverb so I have 20ish instances of the plugin that I really don't want to go in and have to change each one to VST....

Yep. Me too.

I had the exact same issue, and updating Altiverb to 4.3.3 fixed the 'crash on load' problem, but has now replaced it with a 'crash on save' problem. It's all fine until I do any type of saving, including export soundbites or bounce (auto-save will crash it too - which explains why it works for a few minutes then suddenly disappears). It's definitely the MAS Altiverb. VST seems to work. AU won't bring up the edit window for the plug-in (which makes it a bit useless - but at least it doesn't crash the thing).

I'm trying to trouble-shoot to see if I can workaround - at the moment it looks like it's time to turn on the MAS VST support and just use the VST version of the plug-in for now. Unfortunately DP doesn't automatically load the VST in place of the disabled MAS version of the plug-in, so I'll have to go through and replace all the Altiverbs manually.
