DP projects sluggish on Sierra compared to El Cap

Post by dix »

Fashionably late as always, I updated from El Cap to Sierra yesterday.

Everything appears to be working fine, but a large project I'm working on runs intolerably slow on Sierra. If I swap back to a El Cap partition it runs much better. Even with MAS off, running in MIDI Only, the project runs just as slow (there's a ton of MIDI in this particular project). Hard to believe this is everyone's experience. I can see no substantial dif between 11.6 and 12.6. If DP projects don't perform as well in Sierra I'm inclined to retreat. Could it be that projects created in 10.11.6 will run better in that same OS? ...incidentally, I Loaded the sequence into a new Project in Sierra, but it didn't help.

Any insights are appreciated. I'd like to stay as current as feasible if I can.

Thanks!

Just shooting in the dark here, but could it be the physical partition (and not the OS) that's the bottleneck?

To be exact, I installed Sierra on a separate SSD. Nothing else seems slow on the drive. I only notice the difference on a large cpu-challenging project.

Is there a good test or procedure to check to see if there is a problem with the drive?

Thx!

Geekbench is indeed reporting that the drive with Sierra's score is around 650 points slower than the El Cap drive (El Cap: 300069 vs Sierra: 29406). Not that significant on average, but I'm seeing some processes in the report with much greater disparities.

The internet is saying Sierra is optimized for newer Macs and reduces performance somewhat on older machines. So far I concur. I'm going to see if there's anything I can do to raise that score (speed up) the Sierra drive, but I have feeling my retreat to El Cap may be the best for optimum speed on my old MP.

D'oh! It looks like my graphics card is the issue. When I'm zoomed out in the SE and all the MIDI is represented both OS's respond slower, but Sierra much more so. My ATI Radeon 5770 appears happier with El Cap than Sierra.

I may start a new thread that asks for new graphics recos. Please let me anyone has any.

Thx
