Adding spaces on my mac for DP

I want to use the multiple desktop spaces facility on my mac, which is running 10.11.6, as shown in Shooshie's YouTube video.

The online advice says go to mission control, and click on the + sign on the space bar to add the spaces, but there is space bar and no + icon ?

Apple support says that Mission control shows the spaces bar at the top of the screen, but not on my mac, so how do I bring it up ?

I had misunderstood the MC key in the MC window.
