I'm confused why there are no specs on estimated battery life in the MacBook Pro.
Anyone heard anything?

What Apple did was very clever indeed...
Apple put a firm stake in the ground to make
a compelling statement and a show of leadership
as Intel's new poster child and performance leader.
The ability to use a MacIntel as a Windows machine
alongside OS X is the real dark horse here. Something
that sneaked past the watchful eyes of the pundits.
Jobs was smart not to hint this -- which will catch the
Dells and HPs of the world by surprise when the Apple
Marketing machine goes into full gear.
The iPod script all over again....which delivered
a knockout punch to Sony et al...market leaders
at the time.
Wall Street probably got the hint -- Apple stocks
soared on the news.

This is not the same as PCI Express. ExpressCard are the little guys you plug into your laptop. PCI Express is the replacement of PCI DSP cards in the desktop.mastermix wrote:Go here if you need to prep yourself for the

PCI Express is *not* "the replacement of PCI DSP cards in the desktop"

PCI Express, not unlike ExpressCard, is a standard.

Apple stock sure did soar. I checked it the day before yesterday and I think it was going for about $73. Now its up to $83!mastermix wrote:What Apple did was very clever indeed...

Jobs announced their entire product line will be switched to Intels in 2006! Much earlier than expected. All you who bought Quads jumped the gun. By the end of this year you will be able to buy a Mac 2-3Xs faster than your Quad (the end of Digi!!!) and much of the software will have caught up by then. Don't say I didn't tell you so.

I guess I won't buy a quad then.....
I was all ready to go get one and ditch my UAD plugs for a while. But, you're right, it would be much better to wait. Still though, it might be quite a while before all the software has caught up. So, maybe it's not such a bad idea to get a quad...??? I could use the power NOW.

Did you read the specs clearly. The DUAL CORE chips in the current iMac Intels are only on average 2x as fast as the single CORE 2.1 G5 chip in the PPC version. The Qaud is 4 processors/2 dual cores. So where do you get the assumption looking at the products Intel claims will be available that you will get 2-4x the speed.Splinter wrote:Jobs announced their entire product line will be switched to Intels in 2006! SO what they will be shipping dual quads (8 cores???)

I will follow up....The current qud is a 2.5Ghz Chip
Intel chips that will probably find their way into the Powermac My Guess would be the Pentium D Dual Core at 3.4Ghz (Pentium D 950)
I estimate a speed bump of about 1.5X what we currently have.....But then that is a best guess..... Which is pretty darn good but it isn't 3x or even 4x.....
You have not obsoleted the Current quad. No diff from a bump from 2.0 to 2.5 which was a 1.2 X speed increase (roughly)
Mu Dual 2.0 is quite viable when compared toi a dual 2.5, but going from dual 2.0 to QUAD 2.5 is roughly a 2.5x power increase for me.

Hmm, maybe it's just the pessimist in me, but am I the only one that looks at Apple's being way ahead of schedule in releasing these Intel boxes as a cause for caution? It's obvious that they pushed themselves to get these out the door in time for MacWorld. IMHO, they had to cut corners somewhere to do this; most likely in their QA cycle (in my experience, this is what always gets cut when aggressive product release schedules are imposed).
I hope I'm wrong. But, I won't be surprised in the least if 6 months from now we get a slew of field reports of various issues with these products.

considering the fact that they have been testing OS X on intel chips since OS X was introduced I dont think it was a rush. I am pretty certain they already had the plan in motion before we hear dof it. 6 months is our timeline, apples may have been a year or so. Does it really take that long to develop a motherboard when you have the processor developer and manufacturer helping you get the product out?????
I have a revision 1 G5, works fine. I had a Rev1 G3, worked fine. I had a PPC 601, worked fine.....
Apple's reputation is at stake if these are junk.
I am confident about their ability to provide us a great product.
The issue isnt apple, it's the 3rd Party venders. have they been working for the past 6 months to make sure their UB's work on the development intel mac??????

Hi Giles,
I do hope you are right. I wasn't so much thinking about OSX on Intel which, I agree, they've tested to death. Rather, my concerns are more in the area of e.g. batteries (I'm remembering Apple's last laptop recall and iPod refunds), physical construction, component MTBF, etc. I'm sure the motherboards for these two products are new, as are e.g. the Apple Remote thingy and the built-in iSight, so these haven't seen field use. And, obviously, I have only my natural inclination toward expecting worst-case outcomes
to go on
.
Only time will tell for sure. I tend to be one of the last ones in the pool when it comes to new hardware. Software, on the other hand, I usually leap before I look. I guess because my day job is to hack this stuff so I'm more familiar with it.

Cheap Quads on e-bay
Hi,
I saw someone has put a quad G5 loaded with 8GB ram and 500GB hdd x2 on e-bay for 1300 dollars. No shipping fee. Says that the unit is new and has full warrenty.
At first I thought it was a very good deal, but am now starting to think that I am missing something here. The price is too low and the seller keeps changing his e-mail address. Can anyone help me understand what this is about?
