Instability of firewire drivers under XP ?

Post by Baptiste »

Hi,
I'm a french user of an 896HD with a PC since about one year. I'haven't got any problem of drivers or others things under win2k and Cubase SX1, but as everyone know, Cubase SX3 and Nuendo3 run only under winXP. And that's where my problems begin: I tried to install the latest version of the MOTU firewire driver (v 3.5.3.2) on a CLEAN, NEW Windows XP SP2 installation, without multiboot (I don't know if it's important, but we never know...). When finished, FWAkeys.exe is normally running, the MOTU firewire audio application works, but not the CueMix and SMPTE consoles. When I launch this apps, I've got the following message:

"The driver has reported a MOTU error 25.

Called from file \build\Windows\Fwaudio\CueMix\Windows\I_FWCoreIO.cpp line 47.

Driver file C:\build\Windows\FWAUDIO\fwwdm\FireWireProvider.cpp 539 errCode 00000019"

May it be a hardware uncompatibility with my PC ??? :?:
Please help me, I haven't got enough money to buy a big Macintosh...

My PC hardware:
Proc: Intel P4 630 @ 3Ghz
MB: Asus P5GD2 Premium
Memory: 1GB (Corsair Value Select DDRII 512 Mo PC4200 x2) in dual channel
OS on 60GB ATA133 7200rpm IBM Deskstar HD
Audio files on 200GB SATA150 7200rpm Seagate Barracuda HD

Other hardware used with my 896HD: An old ADAT Black, KRK V6 series2 monitors, many electronics instruments (Roland TD6-K, Korg X5-D, SPD20, Yam A3000).
PS: Apologize for my bad english

Hi Baptiste.
Try to uninstall the Service pack 2. I think that it's a bit problematic.

I am a Mac user. I am just curious what this service pack stuff is. Forgive my being unknowledgeable. It just sounds funny to me.

jaffi. A service pack is a major bundle of updates to the operating system. Currently, Microsoft has released two service packs for Windows XP, the most current is service pack 2 -- or SP2. So you'll see people say that they are running Windows XP SP2 (noting that they have installed the most recent service pack).

Baptiste. Happy to hear that you are running. At some point, you will want (or need) to run the most current version of Windows XP service packs, for security reasons or because some other application will expect it. There are patches specfically for FireWire drivers that fix some of the problems that SP2 users have reported, but some people still have SP2 problems. So like I said, happy to hear that you are running.

Cheers.

Hi Smokehouse and the others,

Thanks for the FAST answers by you, MOTU users. I've send the same message to motu support the same day, and I let you guess... No answer...

Thanx again.
No comparison between Cubase SX and Nuendo 3 with ASIO drivers, so about routing options... :( :| :) :D

I have a MOTU traveler firmware v1.05.

I get exactly the same error when engaging the ADAT inputs and try to start cuemix! I have a fresh windows xp install (but _with_ SP2, so uninstall is not possible). TOSlink works perfectly... I have installed the patch for SP2.

More problems: I cannot get the traveler to sync to wc.
Anyone?

Hi JohanBlome,

The driver for the traveler is the same as the 896HD, but there's at least 2 (maybe more ???) firewire microsoft's updates :
KB904412 and KB885222.
Did you download and install the two ones ?

Best regards

Hi Baptiste,

would it be better having the two patches installed or not?

Greetings from Italy!

Hi Lemon,

I didn't install this two patches on my PC because my windows version is not registered, so the authentification tool of microsoft's windows update version 6 doesn't allow me to download this patches...
But this two patches are really different. Visit this web pages (in italian) to know what changes each patch brings to your system.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/904412/it
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/885222/it

It may work better after downloading and installing this patches, but it may not too... If you always experience problems after that, try to install a very light clean windows SP1. If it doesn't work again, verify that your motherboard firewire chipset (or your PCI firewire chipset if your firewire ports are on a PCI Card) is one of the followings : Intel, Texas Instrument or Lucent, and absolutely not one of those: Via or NEC.

Thu Jan 05, 2006 4:10 am (Paris time)

I found the two patches I spoke about and downloaded it. I installed it on my other installation of win XP (the one with SP2, internet connection, many softs in background and a big registry...) and IT WORKS FINE!!!
Despite this success, recommandations I gave you about firewire chipset are still true.
If you need I send you the patches, contact me...

Hello Johan,

The patch that really solves your PB is the KB885222. I tried with SP1 without KB885222 -> it works, with SP2 without KB885222 -> doesn't work (our m***a f***n'error message!!!) , with SP2 and KB885222 -> it works
So you must install it !!!

I don't really know why you can't install the KB885222 patch  , but the KB885222 patch is older than the KB904412, so try the following:

First, uninstall your MOTU properly, for this :!: keep the MOTU plugged and on :!:
1) kill the MFWAKeys.exe process
2) uninstall the MOTU drivers
3) right clic on the "unknown device " ( your MOTU in fact, that's why I told you to keep your traveller plugged and on to uninstall it  ) in the device manager, and clic on uninstall. confirm.
Now you can switch off your traveler and unplug it.

try to uninstall the KB904412 patch, and then install the KB885222. Reboot.

:!: Now don't pass this very important following step: :!:

1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.

2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\PCI\1394_hc_hw_id\1394_instance_id\Device Parameters

(To locate the FireWire controller information, follow these steps:1. Open Device Manager. To do this, right-click My Computer on the Start menu, click Manage, and then click Device Manager under System Tools. You can also click Properties under My Computer, and then click Device Manager on the Hardware tab.
2. Locate your FireWire controller in the IEEE 1934 Bus host controllers section.
3. Right-click the FireWire controller entry, click Properties, and then click the Details tab.
4. Click Device Instance Id. You see a string of letters and numbers that is similar to the following:
PCI\VEN_104C&DEV_8020&SUBSYS_00D81028&REV_00\4&19FD8D60&0&60F0
The information between the two slash marks (\) is the ••œ1394_hc_hw_id". ••œVEN_104C&DEV_8020&SUBSYS_00D81028&REV_00••

Hi Baptiste

You say that when you call up Cuemix, you got an error? And uninstalling XP SP2 helped you out? Now when you call up Cuemix, do you actually see the little mixer and are you able to monitor all of your inputs. I have an 896 and would like to be able to monitor all 8 inputs while recording and not only 2!

Thanks & I hope it's still all holdiong togther for you!

hi Rich,

as described above, I know precisely now (thanx to MOTU users again...) what didn't work in my system and what to do to solve it (read my posts above your first one in this topic). I never had probs with monitoring and Cuemix under win2K or XP SP2 (since firewire fixes naturally... ). So your PB is curious... :| :?
What is the soft you use for recording ? do you use XP SP1 or SP2 ? I need to know that to help you.

I had my Windows on automatic update and about 20 patches and hotfixes were reported as succesfully installed. Owever, looking in the installation logs I discovered (KB885222 was also inlcuded) that none were installed...
So, I will try to reinstall XP.

My problem now is that I do not have accces to the original Motu cd at the moment. Is it possible to install the drivers in another way? What do you do if the cd is broken or missplaced?
