Authorizaion issue on my extra mac

Post by Anders Peev »

Hi all!

I've upgraded to a macbook air with OS 10.11.3.

• It has no disc drive. How do I authorize DP7 on my new machine?
• Will DP7 work on my new machine or do I need to upgrade to DP8 or 9?

I do all my recording and mixing on an old mac tower that can only do Snow Leopard. The macbook is only for live documentaion and editing when I'm on tour. Will my old mac-tower explode if I upgrade to DP9?

I've sent the question to Motu tech support as well, but they usually take their time to answer.

Best,

There is a brief article on the MOTU web site on this.

http://www.motu.com/techsupport/technotes/targetmode

I've also been able to share the DVD drive on my older MBP so a MacBook Air can use it. You'll find that in System Prefs > Sharing I haven't used this for authorization, just reading and writing DVDs, but its worth a try

Thanks! The optical drives are broken on both of my old macs unfortunately. I don't feel it's worth taking any of them to a mac repair shop.

There must be another way?

If you know anyone with an external USB CD drive, that will work. You don't need an Apple SuperDrive.

Otoh, a used SuperDrive or a new USB external is likely to be less expensive than having your old Mac repaired.

DP 7.24 does work in OS 10.11. Not all 3rd party 32bit plugins will—many threads and workarounds on this.

You will likely get an error saying that the QuickScribe font cannot be found and that DP will use the Application font instead. This is easily fixed and can be dealt with after you get it authorized.

A couple of things:

You need to Repair Permissions after an install of DP 7, even in El Capitan. It can't be done in Disk Utility but it's fast and easy. Copy the following line and paste into Terminal, then hit the Return key:

sudo /usr/libexec/repair_packages --repair --standard-pkgs --volume /

At the prompt, enter your Admin password and hit Return. You will see many pages of permissions including the MAS that need repaired. When you get another prompt, you are done.

The QuickScribe Font error, if you get it, is because the installer doesn't know where to put it in Yosemite or El Capitán. DP can use the application font but the way to make the message go away is to install the font properly. Here's how.

Right-click on DP 7 in the Applications folder to Show Package Contents. Open the folder, then the Resources folder till you find the QuickScribe font. Now click on it. You will see a button to Install Font—do so. The message will no longer display.

El Cap is very good about inactivating duplicate fonts automatically but, to make certain, you can open Font Book.app, go to the Edit menu and Search for Duplicate fonts. If found, it's easy to resolve dupes. Many applications including Word and Finale will not work properly (or at all) if there are any duplicate fonts in the system beginning with OS 10.6.

Thanks!! That was really great info and very good news!

The the tech person at Motu said that DP7 won't work on the new Mac, but now I know better!
I'll hook my Mac up with a disc drive at a friends place later on this week!

Thanks again!

You're welcome.

DP 7.24 is not supported. This means that you are on your own and, if there's some conflict, it will no longer work. Many of us find that old plugins will no longer work. Depending on the plug, there might be a solution – either the plugin has been updated or it will work in a 3rd party host such as 32Lives. Other old plugs have to be abandoned. Someday, Apple will discontinue all 32bit support and, when that happens, DP 7.24 will no longer work at all.

BTW, you must install DP 7.24—if that is not the version you have, you need to download the 7.24 updater from MOTU.com and run it. You do not need the interim updaters, only 7.24 + your original CD. Your original CD will work to authorize 7.24, no matter what version of DP 7 the CD is.

Ok, thanks again! I will not be in need of using any 3rd party plugins on my MacBook, since it's only for documentational recordings and editing while I'm not in my studio.
And yes, I have the 7.24 updated in both my macs. Great to now that I don't have to go through all the versions again!
Thank you so much for all the help! I will be comp editing my collegues vocal takes while he drives us through our little Norway tour next week. :D

Best,
Anders
