DP9 and Ist gen traveler, Thunderbolt issue? RESOLVED

Post by KerryMaxwell »

Hi-

When monitoring through DP9, I'm getting a very slight "bathtub" reverb reflection-like tone on my guitar, no matter how low I set the cache. It's very slight, and I don't sense any significant lag when I'm playing, but can't get an absolutely "dry" tone. This tone does not seem to be there on playback, but kind of drives me nuts when I monitoring. It's there with just the bare guitar signal into a track, but not when I monitor direct through hardware. I'm using a mk 1 Traveler>firewire 400-to-800 cable, with an 800-to-Tbolt adapter>iMac 27", and was wondering if this might be introducing some issues.

Thank you

RESOLVED: In trouble shooting this, I tried switching in Configure hardware driver to Built-in audio. I didn't seem to hear the same issue, and when I switched back to MOTU Traveler, the bathroom tile reverb/ reflection sound was gone. So, I still don't know what was causing the problem, but it is thankfully resolved.

I have this same setup and don't have this problem. It sounds like there may be a doubling of the monitoring signal. Check CueMix and see if "Mix 1 Return Includes Computer Output" and/or DP is monitoring "Record Enabled Tracks through Effects". Try using another output pair for monitoring and see if that helps. I hope some of these things point you in the right direction.

I do have Monitor record-enabled tracks through effects on, as I am using Guitar Rig for tracking. If I switch to direct hardware playthrough, I do get a pure dry signal.

You are hearing latency

The issue isn't simple latency. If I record a straight guitar track with no plugins with "direct hardware playthrough" monitoring, the signal is dry-as-a-bone while I'm tracking, but on playback I hear the "bathtub" reverb tone. If I bounce this track to disk, the bounced file sounds completely dry. If I set up a straight guitar track in GarageBand, there is no reflection/ reverb artifacting on either tracking or playback. There's something screwy with the monitoring in DP9 than I can't figure out.
