What goes up...
Must come down.
Spinning wheel goes
round and round...
Sorry. The subject matter, plus the cyclical nature of the problem just suggested those lyrics from the old Blood Sweat & Tears hit. I sympathize.

Re: Spinning wheel when opening projects
I'm actually on 10.8.4 (just updated my signature. Yeah new OS could help but what I'd really need is a new MAC, mine is 8 years old...
I'll try your suggestion MLC but not for a few days I have to catch up now.

Update and tips if this happens to you
Few things I learned from MOTU techlinks support.
Disabling temporarily disabling 3rd party plug-ins at launch. Hold down the 'option' key while launching DP. A dialog box will come up prompting you to select a plug-in set. Select 'Safe'
Disabling entire audio system, hold down the 'shift' key.
I still could not open the problem projects doing this. However, removing my preference folder I was able to finally open those projects that would crash DP. ( quit Digital Performer. Click the ‘Go’ drop down menu from Finder while holding the ‘option’ key and select ‘Library’. Go to the Preferences folder. Drag the ‘com.motu.DigitalPerformer’ folder onto the desktop)
When I have time, I will remove one by one each prefs in that folder as I really want to know what caused this.
In any case, these are the things to try should that ever happen to you.
