Lots of noise/hiss on master bus

Post by Studio Llama »

Greetings all

I'm running a pretty large project, 50 odd busses going to FX, side chains, sub masters etc.

There is a huge amount of audible hiss on the master bus, even when nothing is playing, on the master fader and any analytics plugin, I can see a high nose floor, when I hit play, the hiss has become a bit of a problem.

I know the Waves 1176 plug can add noise when in Analog mode, I have the 76 bypassed in most instances but the noise persists.

I just froze a MIDI kick pattern to audio and could here the hiss modulating throughout the track, sometimes even disappearing then coming back. I have a lot of automation on each track, FX sends, volume pan etc. Could this be causing it? Does anybody else have any experience of this? Or am I going to have to live with it then post de-noise when I master?

Many thanks for any advice

OK, I've tracked it down to the Soundtoys Little Radiator plugin in my 'samba rim' track. I'm not sure if the track was a sample or recorded, I can't hear any inherent noise on the track when the plug is bypassed, but when its on, loads, and mainly it was the points where I stripped the silence, volume automation was still up and the noise was most audible there, with volume fully down, no noise.

So is it a bad plugin? Does DP sometimes randomly have conflicts with certain plugins and introduce noise?

Thanks, G

It is certainly possible for a plug or its settings to generate noise. I can tweak most compressor plugs to be horrible if I wanted.

Sometimes I forget that some plugins adds noise because the noise that was in the original hardware. Specially UAD 224 comes to mind. And I find myself going nuts to find the source of the noise. Luckily all the plug ins I have that include "noise emulation" have a switch for the noise. Doesn't sound like this is what you experience, but just wanted to mention it.
Analog is great... We got both WOW and Flutter - what's your bias?

Yes, I have been confounded by Waves' H-Delay, which can output a fair amount of hiss in certain "analog" emulation modes. One thing nice about a comprehensive template is that we can be sure to set up plug ins as we prefer and avoid potentially vexing issues like this.

Thanks for the replies guys. Yes, with the Waves 1176 there is an 'analog' switch that introduces a tonne of noise, go figure. With the Soundtoys Radiator, just looks like it's a hot, noisy plugin.
