Projects with older sd2 audio files won't open in DP 8

Post by vigormusic »

Hi there!

I have some older projects from either DP6 or 7 that I'm trying to open with DP8. When I look into these folders, the project file is just an executable. So I tried adding .dpdoc to the file name and that will open in DP, but fail to load the audio files. Here is the text of the error message.

Code: Select all

An error occurred while reading from the disk. The file /Users/Kev/Desktop/04.05.08 Home is where Project/04.05.08 Home is where.dpdoc was not loaded.

While reading audio file "Kick", OS error: Resource file was not found (-193)
I feel like I might be getting close, but can't quite figure it out. Any help would be appreciated greatly. :)

Cheers and happy new year! :)

Makes me wonder if this is simply an issue of not being able to open the SDII files (SD2) or whether somewhere along the line, the resource fork was lost.

I hate to send you on a wild goose chase if this isn't your issue, but you can search the forum for "old projects" and "missing resource fork" or words to that affect.

Good luck.

Thanks for your reply! I looked into it a little bit and it gave me some ideas. The file that I had originally posted about had been stored on a network drive. I actually have some similar files on my local drive that use SDII files and will open just fine! This leads me to believe that somehow the files were messed up when stored on the network drive. Very interesting. I'll look into it more and report back in case someone else runs into this issue. :)

I found the answer, and it's a weird one!

I was storing these older files on a ReadyNAS duo v1 network drive. After some research, I realized that my proper AFP connection to that device was not working anymore, only the CIFS was working and that was making the files show up like I had originally posted about. After reading more about this, the problem ended up being that when I got a static IP address in my home, the AFP connection to the readynas drive got messed up. Long story short, I had to reset the OS on the readynas, the AFP connection started working again, I found my files and now that work fine! Crazy!

Thanks again!

The DP files on this networked drive – were they zipped or not?

Nope, they were never zipped. Just copied over as is. Once I got the AFP connection working again, I could access the files just fine. :) :koolaid:

I expected that answer.

In the future, if storing DP files on any server (including DropBox) or backup media, it's always best to zip (compress in the file menu) first. Unzipping will restore file resources and privileges that may be otherwise lost in the process. It will also let you open these more easily on a Mac other than the one you created them on.

I'm glad you got this fixed. Had those files been zipped, however, it is likely that you would not have known there was a problem.

Of course, if those are active files, then this does not apply. Regular backups should be done in that case.
