Ring tones
Hey Gang,
I have a client that would like some of our work to be converted into MIDI files for ring tones. Is there anyone out there that would know the way to do this in DP. What I would do is transcribe the tunes from my client and re-record them to make the ringtones. I am trying to put together a budget and timeframe for them fairly quick., so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you to all. [/i]

My phone plays general MIDI files.... in fact almost all of my ringtones are just MIDI files i've made or have come accross... then i go to www.t1mmy.net and use the vision tool to upload them to my phone for free. Hope this helps... there should be very little converting that needs to happen at all.

amerecordingstudio,
thanks a bunch for responding. I am going to try this route and with my client as well. My main concern and thier's was a compatibility issue with the majority of the phones out there. Our initial plan was to use the actual audio files but, very few phones can actually work this way. Also, my understanding from my client is, I can have 8 note polyphony, which oddly enough is more than plenty.
Do you also put GM Drums on your tones as well or just melody and chords?? If you could I would love it if you could email me one of the files you made ( just a snippet is fine man, if you can't thats cool ) But thanks for the help

8 note polyphony sounds about right
I've seen both with and without drums in MIDI ringtones.
If you want to go down the audio route, most newer (past 1 1/2 - 2 years) phones will accept qcp files... if you google for a converter, you should find one.
Now, i'm guaging this on the phones we have here in Canada (i used to work for Bell Mobility, so, i know their models well enough), so you should be further ahead in terms of compatability in the States.

Okay ,
so here is where I stand at this point. I have make a little 8 bar rock groove with 4 parts (slap bass, dist guitar, electric piano and drums-hi hat, snare, kick). I am using General MIDI to produce these sounds(tht is fine for this test. I have each instrument part going to the proper MIDI channel for each individual part (drums on 10 yadda yadda yadda). I have sucessfully exported as a standard MIDI file (Yeah congrats to me, blah blah blah). Now I open quicktime just to play the SMF in another app. Low & Behold............ Ihear my tune . HOWEVER, the drums are the only instrument I hear played back properly. Each other instrument( bass , guitar, elec piano come out as a defaulted piano sound. My fear is that to give to my client , they will get the same results and it will play as a ring tone the exact same way. What am I doing wrong or what can I do to correct this and here each part correctly as it should be piano bass drums guitar. Please help

Try this:
At the very beginning of each MIDI track insert a "patch change" command (I'm not in front of DP right now but its in there somewhere) and select the GM voice that that track should be.
Otherwise you are just saving the note data and whatever the instruments default voice is for each channel will be what you hear. Apparently for quicktime it is piano on every track (except 10 of course).
