DP DAE + Digi MixPlus - Which software versions?
Hello:
I'd appreciate any advice you might have to build a stable system with this general config:
MDD Dual 1.25ghz G4 computer with Digidesign Mix++ hardware, running with DAE as the audio system.
What would be the most stable OS version and DP version and what would be the appropriate version of Pro Tools to have installed (DP still needs PT to be installed to have the DAE "guts" there, right?).
Mostly the system will be used for MIDI composing to picture with a bunch of aux tracks with the audio returns from Gigastudios and Vstack computers and a few synths. There will be a number of audio tracks printed (24 maybe) and perhaps just a few virtual instruments.
The computer has 10.3.7 (I think) on it right now with some DP 4.5. Is Tiger better? Then I'd need 6.9.2 or .3 of Pro Tools. If Panther then Pro Tools 6.4 perhaps?
Thanks for your time.

If you're using a Mix system, you're capped at Pro tools version 6.41. So the latest OS you can use is 10.3.9. Both of which will work with DP, one other thing, DP will allow you to use plug-in delay comp with your Mix hardware, where Pro Tools won't.
However, digi has dropped support for Mix systems, so you'll never see another upgrade that supports later OS versions.

PT 6.9 is not "approved" with 10.3.9, it is with 10.3.8.
If stability is the absolute most important factor probably some people would recomend 2.72 on 9.2.2. 3.11 is pretty stable on a laptop - but the introduction of the undo history slowed things down quite a bit. Of course a lot of the new features wouldn't be available and you'd have to use older soft synths (Kontakt 1.5something was OK with 3.11).
4.6 with 10.3.8 in DAE has some weirdness - i.e. some problems with unrelated tracks switching their sends to "pre" for no reason- a bit of a problem to keep track of when faders are close to zero so the changes are subtle (fixed by toggling the pre button on the respective send- NOTE that the send pre button DOES NOT reflect the change in status to pre).
This could arguably be more problematic than occassional crashes.
On an HD system DP 4.6 can't use more than 8 192 analogue inputs- not your mix system problem. No multi outs for RTAS instruments in 4.6, but this should have been changed in 4.61- if 4.61 is stable on the OS you need for PT 6.4.

Thanks for responding. It's nice that there are a few DAE users to share info.
From the Digidesign website (the Digidesign.com support pages and users conference is recomended for info that may affect the DAE even if DP is used as a front end)
"Although there are no known issues reported from users with Pro Tools 6.4 TDM or LE and 10.3.5, 10.3.7, or 10.3.8, Pro Tools 6.4 was not tested with Mac OS X 10.3.5 and higher, except as noted below with newer G5 models and 10.3.5"
Whether 6.4.1 was qualified differently or not? DP seemed to have a bug (forgot what it was) on 10.3.7. Maybe something that wouldn't affect everyone.
Regarding the inavailability of inputs 9-16 analouge, Digi hardware setup has been gone through numerous times, if 9-16 were configured in one of the digital formats then it seems unlikely they would should up as an additional set labeled "analogue 1-8". But ProTools itself is currently freezing on that computer so maybe there is something corrupt in the DAE engine (Though DP is otherwise working in DAE mode).
It's good to hear someone has 16 analogue ins from a Digidesign 192 functional in DP- perhaps if you specify your confuguration (OS and software versions DP and PT) it will help in troubleshooting. Maybe it's 6.9.2 works wheras 6.9.1 doesn't?
Thanks
