How much of that does anyone do anymore?

I was referring to his outdated ideas of what consists of a typical ensemble, not how acoustic instruments behave together - that doesn't change. OTOH, he never saw a recording studio nor could have imagined the multi-track process so, yes, I chose "outdated" and stand by it. Any 19th C. work on the subject fits the definition.

My daughter has my copy of "Principles..." But I've no idea if she's read it nor if anyone teaches it anymore. I'm typing this while on a plane to Vermont to watch her receive a Masters in Composition.

Berlioz was a guitar player. I preferred his writings on orchestration. He thought more outside the keyboard.

Thanks for reminding me. I have the book tucked away somewhere, and I'll have to find it. Reading through it now and then is good for you.
Don't forget to brace yourself for the compression session... er, section, Stoivo.

That one requires big lungs... I mean, commitment and stamina!

OP another one hit wonder. If one is not prepared to offer some feedback, please don't bother.

You may not think the first few answers to the original to be that harsh. They basically tell the OP the question is no good.

Read the thread from the start as someone who might just be starting out making music. You might not know enough to ask anything but an uninformed question. You might be 14. You might have put the question out in several places. If the first two responses had been those from Math and Monkey, we might have heard back. As it is, my bet is he, she, whatever, found friendlier, greener pastures, and likely, less well informed answers, and never saw the second half of the thread.

Taking the tough line is something that used to have educational value, but the world has changed, sensitivity reigns, and the outcome is the list becomes a sanctuary for tough old farts.

It was just a general comment of frustration not completely directed at the OP. More than once I have taken the time to respond in what I considered was a thoughtful way to desperate posts requiring urgent information, only to be regarded with deafening silence. Makes me wonder if I was completely off base, and if the response I gave was even relevant to the situation. In the context of a forum it's a lose-lose situation that has made me think twice about responding to any posts at all. Maybe that is a good thing. :surrender:

Did you post a reply to this particular question? I don't see one. Anyway, yes, there are people who ask a question, get an answer, then disappear. Perhaps they posted the question in a dozen places, got an answer elsewhere, and never checked back here. Rude I suppose, but not unexpected.

Effects in DP

I read the question from a completely different point of view. OP could be asking why use effects at all when delivering stems or single tracks to a film mix. There are differing opinions on this just on this board and it's a good question if that's what OP is asking. I agree with the rest of the responses including those suggesting we give the OP a (small) break :)

…string theory says that all subatomic particles of the universe are nothing but musical notes. A, B-flat, C-sharp, correspond to electrons, neutrinos, quarks, and what have you. Therefore, physics is nothing but the laws of harmony of these strings. Chemistry is nothing but the melodies we can play on these strings. The universe is a symphony of strings and the mind of God… it is cosmic music resonating through 11 dimensional hyperspace.

If so, is it possible words of rebuke might be better spent answering the OP's question?

PS: if the OP is 14, I'm sure he or she knows how to query Google. Green pastures abound.
