I really like the idea of the automation lanes, but is it not possible to edit in them like a regular view? I can edit individual volume points lets say, but there's no way to select a group and delete them without also selecting the waveform and deleting it too. There's a trick i haven't found yet maybe? If each lane of automation were truly separate objects, that would be a huge time saver for me.. ideas?

Where does the stuff about VCA faders come from? Did anyone at MOTU ever mention it?

There's no mention of it in the release or the manual. Logic added VCA faders of a sort at 10.1. But they appear to do nothing more than a group or track folder.

I'm placing my upgrade order right now directly from MOTU, now that I can reach their site again, and am assuming that ordering the boxed version is the only way to get the user manual in printed form, but also that the printed manual DOES come automatically with the box and doesn't have to be added as a separate add-on to the order.

I checked this thread earlier today, but now it is pages longer, and I have to do some additional work from home right now, so I am just ordering on faith that I got this right.

I still won't be able to install the upgrade until I finish the one album project that isn't my own (for my own stuff, it's OK to slip the dates). Probably also not until a new SSD, due to disc space, but I expect to do an SSD upgrade right when the album project finishes as well, and am hoping that will be early to mid July.

I took a look at the main DP9 product page but assume there are more details if one digs. I like enough of what I see on the main page to go ahead and do the upgrade now though. Lots of time-savers there, and time is money. Project Notes, templates for adding to projects, enhancements to Sequence View, etc.

I'm ordering directly from MOTU because I see no point in diluting the same price to middlemen when there's no value added anyway. Nothing against the resellers, but I buy direct from vendor when there is no compelling reason to do otherwise.

You can always download the demo and use that while you take the time to make sure the manual comes with the boxed set (which it must -- why else have a box?).

The point of ordering at Sweetwater via the link at the top of the page is to generate cash for Motunation.

Oh, I didn't realize the banner was still a sponsorship funding the site. Sorry.

It's ordered, and I'm in no rush as I can't install it for awhile anyway.

I just finished reading the four main webpages dedicated to DP9, and am very excited.

Also, those pages are very well written and do the best job of anything I've seen yet, to explain the use of each feature in the app and to help develop new workflows and practices.

I was there at the NAMM show demo. Never heard anything mentioned about VCA faders.

I seem to recall the VCA Faders "feature" was part of a rumor that was never substantiated.

After that "announcement" I did some research and printed (and linked here) an excellent article from SOS.

What I did afterwards was change my workflow, as I learned a lot about what I was doing wrong with aux channels. I was then able to verify what I learned.

For me, VCA Faders could be useful if I wanted to apply fewer steps to my stem generation, which I do in real-time these days, but I sort of prefer my slightly slower approach as it forces me to review everything along the way and catch not only technical glitches but issues such as rare "overs" on sub-groups that might not get caught in the larger context.

To sum up, one main advantage of VCA Faders is that you can essentially set all your aux sends (for reverb, delay, etc.) with local context for the trim applied to the sends, and have your overall group faders (or stem mix down faders) maintain the dry/wet relationships within the global context, without having to pre-figure all of your global context for local send levels.

Depending on the genre, this may or may not speed things up and/or help make quicker and better mix decisions. So often, I have templates that apply across projects within that genre and/or project notes that are quick enough to apply.

So, I think where VCA Faders come in most handy is with a control surface (which I don't have) in play vs. mouse and keyboard. And after all, they started as a feature on hardware devices anyway. You can use fewer controls that way and possibly get all ten fingers really digging into the mix.

There is a post upthread from someone who said he spoke to MagicD who confirmed the box version contains the printed manual. The website isn't clear about it, at least what I can find, so I hope the earlier report is accurate.
