Lost all plugins!

Post by davige »

I am using osx 10.7.5 w Dp8. I was adding some free vst to my extensive plug-ins list under-
Library>Audio>Plug-Ins, then enabled them under-
DP>Preferences>audio Plug-ins
After it ran the verification the program crashed, now NO plugins show in Audio plug-ins preferences (no even native osx or dp AU).
I can clearly see all files in finder under-
Library>Audio>Plug-Ins
But nothing shows in DP plugin preferences.
Clicking "new" does not create a new sub-menu.
Clicking default or revert does nothing either.
Needless to say I cant work on any of my projects. :(
Please help- Thanks

This has happened to me half a dozen times at least. For me, it has always been caused by OS upgrades or installing new plugs.

The usual solution is to

a) reinstall the latest version of DP 8 (there is no Uninstaller nor is it necessary)
b) repair permissions in Disk Utility
c) reboot
d) see if the problem still exists

Many recommend trashing the preferences but that has never worked for me while the above always has.

Remove the new files. Reinstall DP again. Repair permissions and reboot again.

If that doesn't do it, trash your DP preferences.

If that still doesn't do it, you may have to go back a few hours in Time Machine and restore.

If it says this, are you in MIDI mode? If there's no audio system running, and MIDI only, it wouldn't have any of the plugins loaded would it? not sure.

Because the audio driver is not loaded, (btw I did reinstall motu audio installer) the app launches in MIDI mode only. Not sure what to do, aside from a big back-up system reinstall.
Several times I reinstalled DP, repaired disk verifications, trash dp pref, beboot/cold shutdown. nothing...

Fortunately I cloned my whole system after the last build w Carbon Copy Cloner.
So - Changed start-up disk in system pref, reboot from clone drive, reauthorized DP and Waves, Then Cloned functional copy to main HD, then ran Disk Warrior for clean up.
Now it works but what a waste of a day... all I did was tried to add LePou vst and it ruined my system...
Such is the path we've chosen.

Good thing you cloned. This is why I tell people to clone their boot drive frequently. You wasted a day. If you hadn't cloned the drive, you would have wasted much more than that. :)

Too be honest though, I usually never clone right before adding new plug-ins, but immediately afterward. So on second thought, I guess I'm okay. I can always go back to a very recent clone. Every time I update something and it proves stable, I clone again. I learned my lesson.

Restoring DP from Time Machine takes a few minutes.

Restoring the DP app? It's various support and preference files? It may be a brute force approach, but sometimes if something goes amok, I just feel like restoring the disc from clone that was made during the disc's last trouble-free state is surefire. I know it's weird perhaps, but CCC is easier for my mind to deal with.

What audio interface are you using and is it showing up in Audio/MIDI Setup and is it working with the OS and with other apps?

Re: IO- Im using motu ultralite mk3. Great lil IO.

Re: time Machine- It takes up too much drive space and can create crashes and glitches in mid project. You never want anything else using the cpu when recording.

Re: Carbon Copy Cloner- in conjunction with Disk Warrior is the best way to maintain a production machine.

Re: original issues- DO NOT INSTALL LePou or Reaper on your DP production system. All I wanted was some more VST and Plug-ins. But the time and frustration was not worth it. DP + Waves is really all you need. YOU'VE BEEN WARNED...
