Good point. My template has 4 VIs each with 4 MIDI tracks, but they are all deactivated in the Chunks window. No point in turning them on until you want to use them.

Call me old school but I generally work with just an acoustic guitar, an unplugged telecaster, or a piano keyboard of some type and a pad of paper and pen.

Until I get the lyrics, chord structure and melody roughed out. Then I will fire up DP and record a guide run through of vocal/instrument. Then I go over it and put in the markers for all the major segments (v1, chorus 1, etc...) so I can bounce around in it fast. And then I flesh out the arrangement, finalize the melody and finally record the "real" lead vocal.

I think the key is having a DP template ready that has all your usual goodies/bundles/empty tracks in it ready to go. Nothing kills creativity like trying to remember how to allocate and configure another track.
