Novation Impulse losing connection to DP

Hi everyone.......
I have a Novation Impulse 61 and am using DP8.07 on a Mac running Mavericks. I'm also running Automap 4.8.

Periodically---like after changing the output assignment for a VI---the Impulse will lose all connection with DP. The only way I've been able to get it back is to restart.

Anyone else experience this? Is there a better (faster) way to re-connect when I lose the connection between my controller and DP?

Though no one responded, I did notice a number of views, so I thought I'd pass along the solution, in case it's helpful to anyone in the future.

Got the following from Novation tech support about 30 seconds after I found the same answer on an old GearSlutz post…

Hi Rick;
Thanks for the email, sorry to hear you're experiencing issues with your Impulse. Let's try creating a new MIDI configuration in you Audio MIDI Setup to see if that resolves the issue. To do this let's go to Finder > Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup then click the Window menu and click Show MIDI Window, or it may say Show MIDI Studio. Then we will click on the drop down box above where it says Configuration, and click New Configuration. Name the configuration as you like. Then open digital performer and try to recreate the issue as you had experienced it in the past.
Let us know how this goes.

The looks to be a good thing to check when experiencing problems with intermittent MIDI devices. I'd never had to mess with Apple MIDI Setup in the past. This was a solid fix for me. Hope it's useful to someone else down the line.

Thanks for posting the fix. I just yesterday got an Impulse 49 and this afternoon I'm going to get it talking to DP.

Last night I tried to get Automap to talk to the Impulse but without success. I just created a new preset in Audio MIDI setup and it's working!!

Plus I just found Eli Krantzberg's Groove3 video series. I'm excited now!

Yes—working through Eli's videos now, but I do not have mapping files stored where he says they're supposed to be in the video (video 16). Let me know how that works for you.

Speaking of Novation keyboards, slightly OT, but I've had an unresolvable problem for months now, whenever the USB connector gets disconnected between any Novation ReMOTE SL Mk1 keyboard and a MacBook Pro MacOSX v.10.6.8 running Mainstage II. This permanently breaks the MIDI connection between keyboard and that application. Reconnecting the cable doesn't lead to any MIDI. MIDI Monitor doesn't even see any. Only quitting the program and restarting it is a solution, which can be problematical when it takes between 2 and 3 minutes to launch, given the large number of channel strips, plug-ins and VI's it is hosting. I have tried creating a new MIDI Configuration, but that doesn't fix it.
I hope James will just this once allow an obliquely related post to stand, at least for a day or two, just in case a wise DP brother has experienced this and gotten around it can share their wiz wit me.
As far as the Novation ReMOTE SL reestablishing communication with DP (8.07) after similarly disconnecting and reconnecting the USB cable, results have been mixed.v Sometimes it does, sometimes, not. A Korg Kross has no problem reestablishing MIDI with the laptop under the same conditions. Big Thanks.

Hi Rick,

My first priority is to get the Impulse to cue and play chunks. I haven't had to deal with MIDI in a very long time so I'm pretty rusty.

What I want to do is assign Song Select numbers 1 – 8 to buttons 1 – 8 on the Impulse.

I have the Impulse transport controls starting and stopping DP and the faders controlling the DP faders so playing a chunk works.

As I understand it, if a chunk in the Chunks Window is assigned a Song Number, then when DP receives a MIDI Song Select message it will cue the chunk corresponding to the Song Select number.

I've tried sending (Button 9) CC#0-0 followed by (Button 3) CC#32-3 which should be Bank Select + Program Change but that doesn't work, I guess because it's not a Song Change message.

The Impulse documentation leaves a lot to be desired (unlike the DP User Guide!) and although Eli's videos are very helpful, I can't figure out how to get the Impulse to send Song Change messages. Do you know how to do this?

I'd love to be helpful, but in all my years of using both Performer and Digital Performer, I've never really done anything with Chunks. Sorry to say you're on your own here.

However… (dramatic pause)… I do recall a segment in Eli's Groove 3 videos (#18, to be more precise) where he talks about mapping QWERTY assignments to Impulse buttons. Perhaps you could create key bindings in DP for your Chunks and then trigger those key commands from Impulse. Just a thought.
