Beachball freeze-up on playback when tracks record enabled.

Post by detroitdiesel »

I'm getting 10 (or 20 or 30!) second delay when I initiate playback when one or more tracks are record enabled. Faithful (and free) audiodesk always jumped at the chance to playback with only a quick spin of the ball. Sometimes DP even chews so long that when the play button finally lights it does noting and finally crashes. I've tweaked all the settings i can think of. The obvious stuff.

When no tracks are record enabled this problem simply goes away. Is this a bug I am just finding out about that is well known to the rest of the DP world?

Thanks, DD

This is a typical symptom of heavy disk fragmentation. I recommend Techtool Pro from Micromat to defrag the disk.

Thanks Magic Dave, Unfortunately, the problem does not come up when I do a test with Audiodesk. Dame drive, same hardware, etc. I will run a few more tests...

anyone else having this problem?

Anyone else having this problem? Considering a re-install. I tried my other HD with both AudioDesk and DP. Just got DP so it's 4.5 not 4.6. Gotta wait for the registration fairy to let me upgrade.

hmm. detroitdiesel could be a non-paying dp user but:

Does this file have elaborate bussing? Haven't checked 4.61, but I noticed this behavior in 4.5 on files that use Auxs heavily. MOTU acknowledged the problem and it got much better in 4.51.

I'm experiencing the very same thing with DP 4.52 running in Panther 10.3.9. I have reformatted my 7200rpm external FW audio drive at least twice and repaired permissions several times over the past week and I'm still getting the spinning beachball whenever I press "Play" with the track still record enabled. I have tried all kinds of setting in regards to the hardware driver and studio size. I'm completely stumped and am thinking of reinstalling everything too. What's the best way to uninstall DP? Do I need to trash preferences? Any advice would be much appreciated!

There is a bug in 4.5. Try closing the soundbites- window.

Thanks Schwarz. You've given me a new route to explore. The Soundbites window isn't open, but I will try closing all unnecessary windows and see if that fixes the problem. Otherwise, I'm going to have to move up to DP 4.6x. This is a great forum!

Update:

I tried closing all unnecessary windows and stil experienced playback problems. Upgraded to DP4.61 and the problems seem to have gone away. In fact, CPU usage seems much lower in 4.61. This is great! Thanks everyone!!

Hi GTSTUDIO,

The playback deal is a pain. (and yes I paid for the comp upgrade) I have tried pressing pause and then play/unpause and that seems to help sometimes. This is how I earn a living and it's GROSSLY UNPROFESSIONAL to experience all these freeze ups. What the heck? I just need to wait for MOTU to get all my stuff in the mail so I can up to 4.6. I hope I hope. I'm a recording engineer not a software debugger. Limited computer knowledge.

Any thoughts MOTU? AD was free and never pulled this kind of thing.

I do like alot of the features. Not a total wash.

this is an oxymoron:
I'm a recording engineer not a software debugger.

...ok, technically an oxymoron is two words, but you get the idea.

In my experience DP is the most stable native DAW by a wide margin. Audio Desk is mere utility compared to DP and therefore less prone to problems.

Hi Detroitdiesel,

Yes, I know what you mean. I was frustrated beyond words (except for a few choice ones now and then) until I decided to move on up to DP 4.61. I had hesitated because I'm on an older single processor G4 and I'd heard that 4.61 needed a reasonably fast processor to work well. I'm really glad that I did it because, like you said, who can get any work done with that "freeze when pressing play" bug. You'll be very happy once you move up to 4.61. Take care for now!

Did this have and funky/adverse effect on projects started in 4.5? Don't want to paint myself into a corner..

After 36 hours locked in the studio...4.61 seems to work without the beachball freeze-up. Whew! (big sigh of relief)

Thanks to all for the input.
